The Rev. Francis X. Malinowski, C.S.Sp., 81, of Bethel Park, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006. He was born Nov. 26, 1924, in Mahanoy City to the late John and Regina Lauritis Malinowski and also was predeceased by sister Rosemary Mark. Father Malinowski professed his vows Aug. 15, 1945, at Holy Ghost Novitiate, Ridgefield, Conn., received his B.A. from Fordham University and St. Mary Seminary and in 1948 continued his studies at Fribourg University, Switzerland. He was ordained to the priesthood Oct. 1, 1950, at Holy Ghost Seminary, Chevilly, France, received his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1973 and was a visiting scholar in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1969 and Cambridge University, England, in 1973. Father Malinowski was appointed assistant pastor at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Philadelphia, in 1952, and then was assigned to Duquesne University for three years as a faculty member. He was assigned to St. Emma Military Academy, Rock Castle, Va., 1955-59, where he taught French and was an athletic coach, and was professor of sacred scripture at St. Mary Seminary, Norwalk, Conn., 1959-67. He returned to Duquesne in 1967, where he taught sacred scripture and was chairman of the theology department and superior of the Spiritan communiy at Trinity Hall. During his 25 years at Duquesne, Father Malinowski also was pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Pittsburgh, in 1977. He was parochial vicar of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Monroe, N.C., 1991 and retired to the Spiritans' retirement home in Sarasota, Fla., in 1993 but continued ministry as chaplain to the Sisters of SS. Cyril and Methodius, Danville, 1998-2001. He had resided in Libermann Hall, Bethel Park, since 2001. Surviving are brothers Leonard, Daniel, Conrad and Jack Malinowski; sisters Eleanor Tirimacco, Joan DiSalle, and Dolores Fiorentino; 30 nieces and nephews, and 34 grandnieces and grandnephews. Viewing will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Spiritan Center, Bethel Park, where Mass of Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, O'Hara. Donations in memory of Father Malinowski may be made to the Spiritans for retirement or the education of future Holy Spirit father, 6230 Brush Run Road, Bethel Park, PA 15102.
