John W. Tomer Sr. Salem Township, Greensburg John Wesley Tomer Sr., 82, of Salem Township, Greensburg, went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, July 12, 2012. He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. John was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him. He was born Feb. 24, 1930, a son of the late James E. and Helen (Rubright) Tomer. He was a 1948 graduate of Greensburg High School. In 1950, John built Tomer's Fishing Lake on Route 22, which he and his wife, Bonnie, owned and operated for many years. Fisherman came from near and far to fish there. They also owned and managed a frozen custard stand, tomato and vegetable market, as well as Tomer's Greenhouses and and Garden Center. After retiring from these businesses near Delmont, they moved to Alton, Ill., where they worked with his brother until they returned to Salem Township in 2003. John was an avid hunter, hunting in Wyoming, Colorado and Canada as well in Western Pennsylvania. He enjoyed the companionship of many German Shepherd dogs over the years. He used his deep bass voice to sing his favorite gospel songs and hymns. John attended North Apollo Church of God where he met and married Bonnie Stephenson more than 61 years ago. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by a sister, Jeanne Witherow; brothers-in-law and dear friends Larry Ward, Bill Witherow and Russell Donaldson; and his beloved granddaughter, Amanda Jeannine Zahorsky. He is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie Stephenson Tomer; children, Patricia Tomer, of Delmont, John Wesley Tomer II and his wife, Sandy, of Glen Burnie, Md., Debra Tomer England and her husband, Darrin, of Venedy, Ill., Robert Tomer and his wife, Angela, of Tomer Lane, Greensburg, David Tomer and his wife, Felice, of Florida; grandchildren, Heather Butler and her husband, Larry, Chasity Tomer, John Wesley Tomer III and Heather Slavy, Christopher Nagy and his wife, Deb, Terrrance Nagy and his wife, Jenny, Robert Tomer II, Danielle Versaw and her husband, Dale, Ashley, David and Patricia Tomer; great-grandchildren, Aaron and Reese Butler, Madison Tomer, Cameron Nagy and Robert Tomer III; a brother, J. Lloyd Tomer and his wife, Christine, of Naples, Fla.; two sisters, Roma Sarn and her husband, Arthur, and Faye Ruble and her husband, Robert, all of Salem Township; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at BASH-NIED FUNERAL HOME, 152 Abbe Place, Delmont, 724-468-8381, where services will be held at noon Monday with the Rev. L. Dean Ward and the Rev. J. Lloyd Tomer officiating. Interment services will follow at Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.
