Edward F. Smetana, 87, of Hampton Township, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013. Born April 18, 1925, in the Overbrook neighborhood of Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Raymund and Anna (Kurtz) Smetana. He was the beloved husband for 64 years of Bertha (Spiegel) Smetana; father of Edward F. (Kathleen) Smetana Jr., of Butler, Leonard C. (Pamela Hewitt) Smetana, of Lunenburg, Mass., Charles C. (Mary Beth) Smetana, of Valencia, Richard J. (Kara Adkins) Smetana, of Allison Park, and the late Barbara A. (Samuel) Clarke of Gibsonia; grandfather of Matthew, Christina, Jennifer, Cyndy, Ashley, Adam, Sarah, Daniel, Keri, Brendan, Justin, and the late David; and great-grandfather of Brady, Lindsay, Evelyn, Aidan, Sean and Brooklyn. He was also preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters. A World War II Navy veteran, Ed honorably served his country in the Pacific Theatre as a Torpedoman's Mate Third Class, taking part in the Philippine Liberation and receiving the Victory Metal. He went on to serve for more than 31 years as a state trooper for the Pennsylvania State Police and after retirement, owned and operated a driver's training school. Ed was a longtime member of St. Catherine of Sweden Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and FOP Lodge 47. Family will welcome friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME and CREMATION SERVICES LTD., 5864 Heckert Road, Bakerstown. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Catherine of Sweden Church with the Rev. Steven V. Neff as celebrant.
