John E. Pater, 91, of Cheswick, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Saturday, March 23, 2013. He was born Dec. 27, 1921, in Pittsburgh, to the late Frank and Anna (Telthorster) Pater and has been a lifelong member of the Valley. John was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator before being honorably discharged. Mr. Pater was a carpenter, working both as an independent and for Union Local No. 333 for 35 years before retiring. John had built many homes in the community and took pride in his work. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and trips to the casino, but especially felt privileged to enjoy his family and grandchildren, which brought him a renewed spark to his life. Survivors include his daughters, Diana (James) Gardner, of Cheswick, Jennifer (Robert) Griger, of Arnold, Jacqueline (John) Cortese, of Murrysville, and Lisa Griffin, of Tiverton, R.I.; his sister, Elizabeth (Harold) Childers, of Ocala, Fla.; his brother, Clifford (Alice) Pater, of Natrona Heights; his sisters-in-law, Linda (Warren) Johnson, of Cumming, Ga., Rosie Zebrine, of Harwick, and Lucy Krugle, of Harwick; his brothers-in-law, Dominick (Ellen) Pizoli, of Cheswick, and Henry Arch, of Harwick; seven grandchildren, Sarah Griggle, Randall Gardner, John, Kristina and Nico Cortese, Cory and Sean Griffin and nephew, David Johnson; and three great-grandchildren, Dean Pater Griggle and Jocelyn and Antonius Griggle. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Medina (Pizoli) Pater, to whom he will be laid to rest beside; and five brothers and two sisters. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Cheswick at THE CHARLES B.
