Mary L. (Dluhy) Scalzott, 88, formerly of Leechburg, passed away at noon Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at the Lorien Nursing Home in Columbia, Md. Her parents were the late John and Mary (Dluhy) Long, of North Vandergrift. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles M. Scalzott, in 1992; as well as brothers, John and Steve Long, of North Vandergrift; and sisters, Anne Jason, of Elizabeth, N.J., and Margie Long, of North Vandergrift. During World War II, Mary worked for several years at an ammunition plant in Latrobe to support the war effort. Mary dedicated her life to her family; son, Charles R. Scalzott and his wife, Gloria G. Scalzott, of Laurel, Md.; granddaughter, Dr. Jennifer M. (Scalzott) Poptic and husband, Robert B. Poptic, of North Olmstead, Ohio; grandson, Charles P. Scalzott and Jenna Lentini, of West Atlantic City, N.J.; three great-grandchildren, Robert Charles Poptic, Angelina Gabrielle Poptic and Michael James Poptic, of North Olmstead, Ohio. Mary is also survived by sisters, Irene (Long) Bochniak and husband, Richard Bochniak, of Rahway, N.J., Eleanor Long, of North Vandergrift, Joan (Long) Kohnken, and husband, Robert Kohnken, of Lavalette, N.J.; and brothers, Joseph Long, of North Vandergrift, Edward Long and wife, Linda Long, of Bossier City, La., and John S. Long and wife, Virginia, of Avonmore. Mary was a lifelong parishioner of St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Vandergrift. She will be remembered by all as a caring, compassionate person who would help anyone in need. Her favorite hobbies were being with her grandchildren, yard work and bingo. Family and friends will be received 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the DUNMIRE-KERR-ROWE FUNERAL HOME INC., 244 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church, with Father James Loew, OSB, as celebrant, and Father John Sweeney, as co-celebrant.
