William August Schweikert Jr., 88, passed away peacefully Friday, April 11, 2014, at home with his family, in Allegheny Township. He was born July 15, 1925, in Ashland, N.J., to the late Anna Rose (Diaz) and William A. Schweikert Sr. Bill worked as a telephone equipment installer for Western Electric - Bell Telephone, now AT and T Lucent, in many of their central telephone office buildings throughout Pennsylvania and in other locations from 1946 to 1981, retiring with 35 years of service. In 1943, he enlisted in the Navy two weeks before his graduation from Haddonfield Memorial High School in New Jersey. He served on the U.S.S. Gridley Destroyer DD380 as a Torpedoman's Mate Second Class in the South Pacific and in the Philippines from 1943 to 1946. His numerous awards included the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic Campaign Medal with 10 engagement stars. He belonged to the Telephone Pioneers (life member), VFW Post 92 (life member) and American Legion Post 0868. Bill was an avid reader and often left his comments and humorous notations in the pages of his books to be discovered by other readers. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and woodworking. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Amanda; and grandpup, Cody. Bill is survived by his wife and roomie, Marian K. Schweikert; three children, Barbara (Jack) Brooks, of Pittsburgh, Linda (John) Frothingham, of Wilmette/Chicago, and Bill (Marty), of Leechburg; five grandchildren, Bill, Tiffany, Heather, Kathryn and Mike; two great-grandchildren, Conor and Austin; and grandpup, Neca. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2014 in the CURRAN FUNERAL HOME, 300 Market St., Leechburg, PA 15656. A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2014, in the funeral home.
