Caruso , Dorothy Elaine
Dorothy Elaine Caruso, 79, of California, Pa., died Tuesday, June 28, 2005. She was born June 2, 1926 in Smock, the daughter of the late John W. and Anna Lent Furnier. Elaine held a PhD. in information science from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh. She taught and did research in the graduate school there, as well as creating Trainer, one of the first interactive computer-assisted learning programs. Trainer taught individuals how to search online databases for themselves, rather than asking a librarian to search for them. In many ways, this prefigured the situation we enjoy today on the Internet, searching for information with engines like Google and Yahoo! Her goal was to empower users to get information they need. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Nicholas Carr Caruso; a son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas and Susan Caruso of Arlington, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Wyatt Caruso. Friends will be received in the MARISCOTTI FUNERAL HOME INC., Anthony N. Mariscotti, Supervisor, 323 Fourth St., California, Pa., on Friday, July 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 2 from 10 a.m. to noon, when services will be held in the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas Chacko officiating.
