Birdine Deans Obituary

Birdine Deans (nee Dail), age 92, passed peacefully, surrounded by her 4 children and family in her home at Meadow Glen in Leesburg, VA on July 1, 2025. She was predeceased by her adoring husband of 73 years Johnny H. Deans Jr. and her firstborn grandson, Chad Deans. She is survived by her children, Johnny Deans III (Deana), Paul Deans, Patricia Kalb (Tim), and Cheryl Warfield (Dave) and former DIL, Geoffry Deans. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and even 2 great-great grandsons. She will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews and the kind and loving staff at Meadow Glen who cared for her attentively to the end.
Birdine was born February 7th,1933 in the Ayden area of rural NC to Paul Augustus Dail and Pearlie Annie Dail (nee Baker). She was the youngest of 12 children, having 10 older brothers (and only 1 sister who did not survive infancy). She met and married Johnny in 1948. They moved to Washington DC and eventually settled in Gambrills, MD. She spent her time raising her children and cooking delicious southern meals. She also worked at a nursing home for a time. After the youngest children were older, she went to barber school so she could work alongside Johnny, at Langley Park Barber Service, which they owned together. They retired to Myrtle Beach for 20 years before returning to the DC area to be near family.
Birdine will always be remembered as the kind of wife, mom and grandmom that everyone needs and deserves. She was affectionate, nurturing and kind. She was devoted and selfless. Her love was boundless and unconditional. It spilled over to those outside her family, so they felt the warmth too. She was sweet, but also fiercely protective when she needed to be. She had a beautiful alto singing voice which she used to sing hymns, soothing every baby that she rocked so lovingly. She was a baby whisperer extraordinaire. Her entire life was spent devoted to babies and the elderly, one way or another. She would drop everything to be there when needed. We adore and honor her for the beautiful example she was to all. She will be greatly missed. But solace is found in knowing that she trusted Jesus and is with Him now.
Her life will be celebrated on Sunday, July 13th at 11:00 AM at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg with her grandson, Pastor David Deans presiding. Interment will be at a later date at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery in MD.

I had a very soft spot for Birdine and will miss her tremendously. The words spoken here are tried and true, as she would show the same affection and love to my own daughter when she would come to visit Meadow Glen. Visiting the Deans room when they lived together was just like visiting home, Birdine would still be setting the table for her Johnny. She would put your face between her hands, smile and say, "I love you" And you couldn't help but believe it! I would sometimes sit in the chair next to her in her new room after her husband passed away, we would watch tv and share chocolate and an Ice-cold diet DR PEPPER from her fridge.
