Dorothy May Sanders Howard, 96, of Perryton, Texas—formerly of Lubbock, Texas—peacefully walked into the arms of Jesus on July 12, 2025. A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, Dorothy’s quick wit, honesty, and vibrant personality left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.
Born November 16, 1928, in Chautauqua, Kansas, to the late George and Helen Sanders, Dorothy was recognized early for her fierce intellect, graduating as valedictorian of her high school class. Though she hailed from Kansas, she built her life in Texas—spending most of it in Lubbock—before recently moving to Perryton to be closer to family (even if it was "kicking and screaming").
In Lubbock, Dorothy was an accomplished bookkeeper, holding the same position for 50 years. She was a faithful, longtime member of Second Baptist Church and an active member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Lubbock chapter. She treasured her friendships and loved hosting weekly games of “Hand and Foot,” always accompanied by her loyal furry companion, Sunny, who never left her side.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, Robert Michael Howard; her sister, Georgia Wise; and her beloved companion, Johnny Gafford.
Dorothy was greatly blessed by the Lord in building a loving family who will miss her dearly. Her legacy lives on through her children: son, David Howard, and wife Julie of Kingsland, Texas; and daughter, Frances Aston of Perryton. Her loving grandchildren: Jennifer, Ashlei, Melissa, Ben, and J. Her beautiful great-grandchildren: Jace, Max, Hixson, Emma, Hadley, Blake, Hap, Audrey, Braeden, and Keely. She is also survived by her dear brother, JD Sanders, and wife Faith of Cedar Vale, Kansas; one special niece; and three equally special nephews and their families.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Rachel O’Beirne; the staff of The Seasons; Ochiltree General Hospital; OGH Crossroads; OGH Hospice; and Capstone Healthcare for the compassionate care they provided during Dorothy’s time in Perryton. Special thanks also go to Ingrid, Josie, Twila, and the many caregivers who loved and cared for our mother and grandmother.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM at The Seasons in Perryton.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations to OGH Hospice or a Christian charity of your choosing.

Dorothy was such a beautiful and precious lady! I met her early on when I started attending at Second Baptist and we hugged every Sunday morning for years. I’ve missed those hugs for awhile now but I know she is wrapping her sweet arms around others she hasn’t seen in a long time and I will see her again.

She was very much loved by her brother. We enjoyed her wit, wisdom and our many visits, especially the sibling trips and vacations. She will be missed!
