In lieu of flowers, memorials in Dorothy’s name can be sent to: Egeland Union Cemetery, c/o Jamie Jacksen, 7360 85th St NE, Egeland, ND 58331; Towner County Historical Society, Attn: Anita Barrett, 108 4th Ave, Munich, ND 58352; or an organization of your choice.

Dorothy Noriena Tohm was born February 17, 1926, on the family farm near Gardena, ND, the only daughter of Benjamin and Leonia (Hahn) Tohm. She attended Gardena Public School and was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Gardena. Dorothy married Delbert Johnson, a young and handsome guitar-playing man on December 6, 1945, at the church parsonage in Gardena. They made their home on a farmstead near Egeland where they raised their family and farmed for 50 years. They were nicknamed Del and Dot by family and oftentimes she was called "Joe" by Delbert. Dorothy was a member of the Lakeview Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School, was active in the church's Ladies Aid and quilting circle and kept very busy raising six children. With only one child left at home, she began cooking at the Egeland School. She loved spoiling the school kids as well as the teachers with homemade meals and retired after 20 years. They lived in Egeland during the winter and on the family farm in the summer until 1996 when they moved to Cando to be near family. At the age of 70, she worked at the Towner County Living Center for seven years helping feed the residents. At the age of 75, she became a licensed CNA, fulfilling her dream of becoming a nurse! As the saying goes… bloom where you are planted.... and she did just that! She loved helping others. She treated the residents like she would her own parents, and the residents loved her special care. There wasn't anything Dorothy was afraid to tackle, and her children and grandchildren were recipients of many of her hand-made gifts. She loved to cook, bake, garden, can, sew, quilt, crochet, paint ceramics, draw/sketch, work on puzzles, create homemade stuffed animals and Cabbage Patch dolls for all of the grandkids, craft, play organ and keyboard by ear, and was known for changing furniture around frequently. She was a self-taught seamstress and made most of her kids' clothing including their holiday/church clothes, wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses. She was a hard-working mother and farm wife who worked just as hard in the home as she did on the farm milking cows as well as helping in the field, all while raising six children. There wasn't much she didn't know, and if she didn't, she would figure it out. Even though she still had a child at home, and later a job, she was thrilled when she became a grandma! Each one was welcomed with open arms, blankets, and lots of love! She made sure the holidays were celebrated with all the family’s favorite food. When her last two grandchildren arrived 20 and 17 years ago, she enjoyed every moment she could with them, rocking and babysitting as often as possible. Dorothy's family was her pride and joy, and she enjoyed retirement with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and sharing her baked goods and soup with neighbors. She was known for her sharp memory, gift of gab, and recalling events that happened in her life. That ability never ended, and she never ceased to amaze us how she remembered everything so clearly. Sadly, Delbert passed away on her birthday in 2003 and she eventually moved to an apartment in Cando, assisted living at Prairie View Estates, and a few years later to Lake Country Manor in Devils Lake after she lost her eyesight. She enjoyed making new friends and continued to play the keyboard to keep herself busy. She survived the isolation of Covid by listening to KDLR. She missed cooking and crafting, praying that her vision would return so she could enjoy life more fully again. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, grandparents, mother-in-law and father-in-law, great-granddaughter Jayleigh Halverson in 2009, son Ronald in 2011, daughter Carole Hintz in 2014, grandson Tyler Halverson in 2019, great-grandson Oliver Johnson in 2020, and son Kenneth in 2024, brothers Leroy (Lorraine) Tohm, Melvin (Faye) Tohm, Marvin (Leona) Tohm, brother-in-law Vernon Johnson, and sisters-in-law Mildred (Mervin) Becker, and Pearl (Ernest) Lehman. She is survived by her daughters Linda (Don) Shock, Diane (Jeff) Halverson, Angela Freund, daughter-in-law Patty Johnson, son-in-law Lloyd Hintz, her grandchildren: Brad (Terri) Hintz, Stacy (Bill) Connor, Sara Johnson, Corey (Jennifer) Shock, Darin (Jeneve) Shock, Jason (Monica) Halverson, January (Grant) Obenchain, Heather (Jason) Lee, Jared Johnson, Alliana Freund, Sean Freund, 17 great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren, 3 step great-great-grandchildren, brother Vernon (Rosie) Tohm, sister-in-law Doris Johnson, god children: Donna Reinholtz, Roger Hahn, and Marianne Hall, and special friend Perry (Kari) Kopp.

My heart is saddened! Dorothy was a very special lady she will be missed by many! So many fond memories of my sister and I hanging out at her house. Coffee and goodies were always ready! Our deepest sympathies to her family but I know she with Jesus and those of her family who’ve gone before her. Sending hugs, love and prayers!
