Harold E. Newell Sr., 94, of Zanesville, passed away peacefully at his home, Friday afternoon, December 13, 2024.
Born March 21, 1930, in Muskingum County, a son of the late Conard and Frances (Welsh) Newell. At the age of sixteen, Harold joined the Army where he finished basic training and received an honorable discharge and recommendation for further military training. He later joined the Air Force Missile Corp during the Formosa Straits conflict.
Harold retired from Burnham after 27 years. He served as a Trustee for Muskingum Township and Assistant Chief on the Muskingum Township Fire Department. Harold and his wife, Alberta, ran the 200 Club for the fire department, raising money for a new fire engine. He was also a member of the Ruritans, VFW Post 11072 of Dresden.
Harold is survived by his brother, Gerald (Joan) Newell of Zanesville; sons, Mark (Tina) Newell of Zanesville and John Newell of the home; grandchildren, Candra (Mel) Mahlke, Dade Newell Sr, Stacy Evans, Tessa Tilton, Jason (Crystal) Newell, Brandon (Karen) Newell, Ryan (Kay) Newell, Jordan Newell, Trisha (Aaron) Swihart, Rylee Newell; many great grandchildren; great great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
In additional to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Alberta Newell, who he married in 1955, and she died April 10, 2004; brothers George, Gene, Lewis, John, Dwayne and Dwight; sisters, Mary and Velma; and two sons, Conard “Bob” and Harold Jr.
Family and friends may visit 2-4 & 6-8 pm, Monday, December 16, 2024, at the Dresden Chapel of Vensil and Chute Funeral Home, 714 Main Street.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at the funeral home with Rev. Darren Tolbert officiating.
Harold will be laid to rest next to his wife at Prospect Church Cemetery, Dresden, with full military honors presented by the VFW Post 1058.
