On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, God, our loving Father, reclaimed the gentle soul of His child, James Thurman Ferguson, who passed away at the age of 73 in Lynchburg, Virginia. Born on May 26, 1952, James was a lifelong resident of Lynchburg. From an early age, he built a life rooted in hard work and responsibility. As a proud big brother, James took great pride in helping care for his younger siblings and showed an enduring devotion to his beloved mother, Mattie Hazel Saunders Ferguson-Scott, whom he loved deeply.
James was the son of Mattie Hazel Scott (formerly Saunders) and the late Thurman “Buck” Ferguson. He spent much of his life as a dedicated truck driver - a career well suited to his steady spirit and love for the open road. He often shared stories of his travels to different states, recalling with remarkable clarity events and places as if they were photographs in his mind. Outside of work, James had a true talent and joy for working on cars and trucks. His mechanical skills became a well-known gift, often shared with family and neighbors who sought his help. Whether under a hood or in conversation, James offered his quiet strength, kind heart, and a gentle sense of humor - often playfully scaring the little ones just enough to make them laugh.
Raised in the Baptist tradition, James lived by the values of humility, faith, and service to others. His life was a reflection of quiet devotion to God, to family, and to the community around him.
James is survived by his loving mother, Mattie Hazel Saunders Ferguson-Scott; his children, Damian Ferguson (Anna), Nicholas Ferguson, Lanesha McKnight (Lawrence), and Terrell George; and his cherished grandchildren, Naomi, Delilah, Kayla, Lauryn, Maya, Gabriel Lawrence III, and Tayvion. He is also survived by his siblings: Laverne Carter (Ronald), Ora Ferguson-Bell (Richard), and Reginald Ferguson (Linda); an aunt, Fannie Ferguson Banks; along with many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
James was predeceased by his sisters, Brenda Ferguson and Juanita Ferguson-Silver (John).
James Ferguson will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering love for family, and passion for fixing engines. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
He will be deeply missed.
