Josephine L. Avallone “Our Loving Mother”
Josephine L. Avallone, 99, of Carthage, New York, passed away on Monday, January 13,2025 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.
Josephine was born July 24,1925 in Carthage, the daughter of Bernardino and Anna Grieco Remedianni.
At a young age her family moved to New York City. She attended a trade school to learn sewing and went to work in the production of books and magazines to include a school supply catalog, Mademoiselle and Charm.
Frank, her future husband and Josephine were both born on Adelaide Street, in Carthage and their parents, Maria and Antonio Avallone and Bernardino and Anna were each attendants at the others wedding. They met on a family visit to New York City while Frank was on furlough from the Navy. They were married in the Church of The Nativity, in the Bronx, October 18, 1947.The newly married couple returned to Carthage and resided on Adelaide Street where she was a homemaker. Once the house was full of children, over a twelve-year period, her devotion to motherhood was unparalleled. In later years her social circle expanded to young and old and then she became known as Grandma and Grammy. Names she cherished.
Josephine was a communicant of St. James Church, a former member of the Ave Maria Circle and the Carthage Co-Ed Bowling League, an avid NY Yankees fan and she loved hearing anything Frank Sinatra.
She is survived by her five children, Frank (Paula) residing in Ohio, Anthony (Ann) in Louisiana, Janet (Jim) Callahan of Williamsville, Nancy (Dennis) Goodnight of Missouri and Paul of Watertown, 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Josephine is predeceased by her husband Frank, a son Steven, a grandson James, her parents, two sisters, Helen and Sadie, and four brothers, James, John, Albert and Frank.
The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation for the wonderful home health care that Josephine received from a loving “Band of Angels” while she completed her last year of life on Adelaide Street.
Also to the professional staff at Jefferson County Public Health for their home care program and the staff of medical personnel and health aides at Meadowbrook Terrace Assisted Living Facility.
A huge thank you to the Samaritan Medical Center medical staff of Doctors and Nurses that oversaw her last days of life.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Josephine L. Avallone, 99, of Adelaide St. Carthage, will be held on Friday, May 2,2025 at 11:00am at St. James Catholic Church in Carthage with Rev. Joseph Genito OSA officiating. Private burial will follow the mass in St. James Cemetery, Carthage. Josephine passed away on January 13, 2025. We were so lucky to grow up by being welcomed and spoiled by Josephine Avallone and many other absolutely wonderful Italian Mothers and Joey’s sister Lucille on or close to West End Ave. Any time you encountered any of the Moms you were asked how we were, how was you day and were we hungry. Of course we enjoyed the grand cooking and
marvelous treats. So lucky to have this kindness as we were growing very up. We felt safe and loved. Truly enjoy the wonderful memories that you shared.

Josephine's smile and warm personality was a gift to us. My mother, Marion, would buy her delicious Italian Roll at the Annual St. James Fair. Then, after my mother's passing, she decided to give me her recipe. To make sure I did it correctly, she invited me to her house to give me the recipe and share her hints about making it. When, I make it, I always remember her...and I believe she is right next to me making it. My deepest condolences to all the Avallones. Janet Zando

Josephine would always wish us a good time when I would come up from the avenue and stop and get
you and Lenny. We would then continue on to the ball diamond or down the street across from Vinney's
and play baseball all afternoon. She was such a good mother to all of you. May she find eternal peace with God.

To all the Avallone family, Please accept my heartfelt condolences and sympathy. I have many fond memories of your mom from the strong connection my family had of the Adelaide St neighborhood and the St. James Catholic Church. I look back now and realize what a blessing it was to grow up around such wonderful people such as your mom. The Bible verse from Matthew 25:21 comes to mind when thinking of Josephine,"Well done good and faithful servant". May God give you comfort, peace and strength at this time of grief.
