Mr. Richard Cornelius Berry IV was born in Petersburg, Virginia to the late Richard and Isabel Berry. Affectionately known as “Dick, Mr. B, Papa, Poppi and Papa Two”, transitioned peacefully on Thursday, July 3, 2025, surrounded by family at his home.
Richard joined Bethesda Baptist Church, Colonial Heights, Virginia, at an early age. He was a 1962 graduate of George Washington Carver High School, Chesterfield, Virginia. Richard retired from Overnite Transportation and was last employed by Easy Medical Transportation. He loved to drive any and everywhere to help people.
Richard loved life and lived life to the fullest. He was the ORIGINAL Washington Redskins fan and took great pride in the way the team closed out this past season. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, going to the drag strip, and most importantly spending time with family and friends. His favorite time of the year was Christmas, as it was a tradition to read the Christmas Story on Christmas Eve and make sure everyone that attended received a gift. Most of all, field trips with Papa were the highlights of every summer.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Janet Jones Berry.
Richard leaves to cherish his memory: four children, Eric “Chubby” Smith (Sheila), Janey “DeeDee” Webster (Frankie), Mark Smith (Sandra), and Jennifer Caple (Michael); thirteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Alice Pyer (Charles); five brothers, Lewis Berry (Valeria), Michael Berry (Nell), Leo Berry (Elizabeth), Alonzo Berry (Karen), and Emmett Berry (Judy); and one uncle, James Arthur Lanier; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends, and the Woods Edge Road Crew.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Stephen L. Hewlett, eulogist. The interment to follow at Mt. Minnis Memorial Park.
A family and friends visitation will be held from 7:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the funeral establishment.

To the Berry and Smith family, we are thinking of you and your family as you celebrate the life of your beloved. As we reflect of the smile and hugs received from “Dick” whenever we were in his presence, especially at Christmas when he would stop by and bring us a holly branch. Every time I was around Uncle Richard growing up, he was always so cool, calm, and very reserved. We've had many talks over the years, and he would always say what you needed to hear. If you needed to straighten up an area in life after talking to him, you knew what you needed to fix. He said it with a smile, too. Sending my sincere condolences family, Uncle Richard, we will miss you, but we will never forget you. We love you and know we'll see you again in Heaven. Family, we know he's rejoicing in Heaven now. I love y'all and miss y'all.

Prayers and sincere condolences is extended to the family. Remembering him at Christmas time delivering the Holly bush, rewarding others of the meaning of it's purpose. He was a great joy to talk and socialized with. Sharing his funny stories in life and remembering seeing and chatting with Mr. Earl West and old man Henry Jefferson from the Bermuda Run community social gang, sitting out singing at the back of Mr. Henry's building and enjoying joking around. He was a great man of God, helping others . RIP MR. Richard Berry.
