Sharon Lucille Moe Miranda
April 14, 1942 - June 1, 2025
After battling Alzheimer's for eight years with grace and elegance, Sharon died in her sleep, peacefully listening to music in Long Island, New York on Sunday afternoon June 1st, 2025.
Sharon Moe was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on April 14th, 1942. Her father was a Lutheran Minister and her mother was a singer, piano teacher, choir director, and mother of five children. From a young age, Sharon was extremely talented and she was blessed to be able to do what she loved her entire life! She began playing piano at 5 and French Horn at 10 years old. The French Horn was her first love.
Sharon attended St. Olaf College where she later won the Distinguished Alumni Award. After winning a competition at just 17 years old, she was awarded a full scholarship for her education and subsequently earned a Masters of Music from Manhattan School of Music in NYC. She won many more competitions, awards, and scholarships throughout her life, including: the Most Valuable Performer Award from NARAS (National Academy for Recording Arts and Sciences), being nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for her composition, “Windows” in 1985 and receiving the Pioneer Award in 2017 by the International Women’s Brass Conference for her outstanding career.
Music was forever intertwined with her destiny. She became a renowned French Horn virtuoso, playing in concert halls and stages all over the world. She was also a very talented composer and later, a music teacher. When she met her other half on the stage of Carnegie Hall, Anthony “Tony” Miranda, the two fell in love and from then on they made beautiful music with their French Horns together. They were married until Tony’s death in 2000. They had one daughter, Antonia.
Sharon was a long time member of many orchestras and music groups, including:
Principal Horn at the American Symphony Orchestra, Musica Aeterna, Colonial Symphony, New York City Opera, New York City Ballet, New York Chamber Soloists, the Vermont Mozart Festival, Bronx Arts Ensemble, the Long Island Philharmonic and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Her career brought her all over the world and sometimes her daughter joined them on tour. She also contracted musicians and performed at Marble Collegiate Church for many years.
In addition to performing, playing on recordings, teaching, and contracting musicians, she composed several pieces for orchestra, choir, and brass. Sharon loved creating music. She arranged hundreds of pieces over the years. She was a member of ASCAP and her compositions were premiered at Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, and various other stages across the United States.
Sharon was an incredibly supportive wife and mother, always talking about God and thinking on the positive side. She loved to help others succeed and was an inspiring and beloved teacher at various institutions including Manhattan School of Music Prep, New Jersey City University, Long Island University, and conducting master classes at various colleges. She always encouraged her daughter and anyone that would listen to dream big and reach for the stars. If she could help them succeed, she did. Her family knows that she is now an angel watching over all of us.
She is predeceased by her husband Tony Miranda and her brother Sylvan Moe. She is survived by her daughter, Antonia Miranda and her siblings Janet Baldwin, Karla Moe, and Rick Moe.

Sharon and I were best friends in Rapid City, South Dakota. We attended Interlochen National Music Camp for 2 summers and gained connectivity for our entire life. At 83 years of age, I remember one constant message she had for me: "COME LIVE IN NEW YORK AND TEACH PIANO HERE." After 17 years as a college professor in Louisiana, I think I did the right thing. However, I missed our friendship.

Dearest Sharon was the most wonderful colleague, friend and neighbor. We worked together at City Opera and were Sunnyside neighbors. Wonderful Sharon often gave us (me and choristers) a ride home after a show. Those rides! Oh wow! What great fun. What a beautiful player and great human. Sincere condolences to her daughter and family.

Dear Antonia, Rick, Karla, and Janet, and families,
As you know, Sharon was such a part of our Johnson family's life❣She and Kris Borsgaard Wee even lived at 1110 with us!! They helped us celebrate birthdays, babysat us, told us bedtime stories, supported our busy parents in their lives by caring for Sigurd, Tor, and me while they were students at St. Olaf Sharon, Kris and I were actually "blood sisters". Janet and I were junior bridesmaids at Sharon and Tony's wedding!
I also have many fond memories of family trips to New York, being with Sharon &Tony, exploring the city, going to concerts and broadway shows, visiting their place in Connecticut. (All before you were born Antonia!)
As many people are recalling their music connections to Sharon, I too can relate to that world. She was the person who started me on the French horn in 4th grade, up at Arrowhead music camp.
Though I have not been a part of your lives for many years now, the past connections and the ongoing love that she shared with our whole family through the decades, remains a strong bond. I am so sad that she is gone.
Much love to all of you as you say good bye to your extraordinary Mom and sister.

Sharon was always one of the most conscientious and dedicated musicians I ever had the opportunity to work with. She was always enthusiastic about the music she was playing, and treated everything surrounding her performances with the seriousness, creativity and personality each piece deserved. Without the help of both Tony and Sharon, musically and professionally, my career wouldn’t have had the opportunities that they provided for me. I’m always grateful to both of them. Working with Sharon on a regular basis over the entirety of my career provided some of its most memorable moments. She will be missed as a musician and a friend, and I send my deepest sympathies to her family, and especially Antonia, and wish nothing but the best for her moving forward. Sincerely, Roger Wendt,.

I am sorry to hear about the passing of Sharon Moe. As a high school student in the Mannes Pre College division in the mid 1960's, I was thrilled to travel into Manhattan from Long Island to take horn lessons with Sharon once a week. She was always so very kind, cheery and positive in her approach which was wonderful for a young student. The NY horn world has lost a terrific musician.

Sharon Moe Miranda was a world class musician and a wonderful friend. Richard and I and our family had the pleasure of listening to her French Horn music and the joy of sharing her friendship for many years.
We enjoyed dinners , concerts and Broadway shows together. Had picnics and sailing adventures in Vermont . Sharon played for our daughter Allison’s wedding and spoke at Cheryl’s wedding.
We also loved being with Sharon and Tony. Had lots of “power breakfasts “ with them and Antonia in NYC . Shared many times filled with joy and laughter with Sharon and Antonia.
We will always treasure our memories of our dear friend Sharon Moe.
Love, Kay and Richard Ryder and family .

Sharon was a hero to me as a young French Horn player. Along with my cousin, Sarah Johnson, we enjoyed summers with her at Arrowhead Music Camp in Barnum, MN.
I still can recount her robust laugh!

My condolences to Antonia and her family. I remember when Sharon will take me to tennis camp in the summer and she would treat me like her own daughter. She was an amazing musician and would invite me to her concerts. They would always serve apple cider at the end of the concerts and I would think I was so cool drinking “champagne”. She will be someone I will always remember.

Sharon played horn in the St. Olaf Band in the early 60’s under the direction of my father, Miles Johnson, who was also a horn player and Sharon’s horn teacher at St. Olaf. My dad knew she was very gifted right away. She remained a very dear friend of our family throughout her successful life and career. Whenever she would visit us in Minnesota Sharon and my dad would spend hours playing horn duets. She was very devoted to our family, the way she was with all her friends.

As a young horn student in HS I was lucky enough to hear both Sharon and Tony perform as soloists at the Met Museum concert series and Alice Tully Hall quite a few times in the mid1970’s. Hearing them both as soloists was inspiration to me at a critical time in my development. While I never worked with her, I was lucky to have taught some of her former students. She would occasionally call me to ask how they were progressing and to give me full support in direction I was guiding them. Her sincere care and devotion to her students never ended. I wished I had known her better but I’m grateful that she touched me with her musicianship, generous spirit and kindness. RIP.
