Veronica “Bonnie” Ann Sarkozi was born to Herman and Collette (Sheridan) Laue on August 29, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois.
She passed from this life on August 13, 2025 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 84.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Robert Paul Sarkozi in 2024.
She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Lewis P. Sarkozi, Jr.; son, David Sarkozi (wife, Donna); daughter, Cathy Honeywell (husband, Doug Honeywell); granddaughters, Libby Buck (fiancée, Josh Baker) and Abby Buck Terrazas (husband, Phil Terrazas);one great-grandchild, Remy Terrazas, expected to arrive very soon; sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” Smith and Margaret “Margy” Merryfield.
Bonnie graduated from New Braunfels High School and attended Southwest Texas State College. She met Lewis on a blind date when she was 19, and they married and moved to Virginia for several years. They returned to New Braunfels in 1963 with David and Cathy.
Bonnie was a part of New Braunfels city administration for many years, first as a Municipal Court Clerk, then as Assistant City Secretary, and finally as City Secretary. She enjoyed her job, attending city council meetings and overseeing city elections late into the night. After retirement, she continued to be interested in the city, serving on the Redistricting Committee and the Arts and Culture Task Force. She enjoyed the arts and supported and volunteered at Circle Arts Theater and the New Braunfels Art League.
Bonnie was smart, happy and fun-loving. She was a great conversationalist and a formidable Trivial Pursuit opponent. She was a kind and generous person and very proud of her children, often listing their accomplishments to friends and neighbors – and the occasional stranger.
One of Bonnie’s hobbies was visiting wineries with Lewis. They sampled liberally, and she always brought cheese and crackers along for a snack between wineries. During her lifetime, she also enjoyed cake decorating, sewing, word games and cooking.
Libby and Abby remember Bonnie as a fun grandma, taking them on adventures around the Hill Country and teaching them silly songs. She loved to sew outfits for her granddaughters and was very patient teaching them to use her sewing machine. She'd take Dramamine (affectionately called "Grandma-mine" in the family) just to ride a roller coaster at Fiesta Texas with Libby and Abby. Bonnie took her granddaughters to see their grandfather's plays and kept them entertained with M&Ms at intermission. As Libby and Abby got older, she and Lewis taught them about wine and showed no judgement when Abby would only drink cheap Pink Moscato in college.
She was a very proud grandmother, as evidenced by the shrine of Libby & Abby on her mantel and the many dance recitals she attended. She was always excited to introduce her granddaughters everywhere she went - asking "Aren't they beautiful girls?!"
Now it is her children’s and granddaughters’ turn to be proud - wasn't Bonnie beautiful? We are proud of her intelligence and constant excitement to learn more; her wits, sass, and sense of humor; her stories from over 30 years working for the city; her famous Christmas cookies and expert sewing skills; her 65-year marriage to her perfect match; and mostly, her warm spirit that we will hold close forever.
A Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, August 25, 2025 at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels.
