Sylvia Miles was an actress known for her small but memorable roles in 1969’s “Midnight Cowboy” and 1975’s “Farewell, My Lovely.” She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for both movies. In “Midnight Cowboy,” she played a middle age woman who has an encounter with an aspiring hustler played by Jon Voight. Miles starred in Andy Warhol’s “Heat” and played off beat characters in “Crossing Delancey” and in an episode of “Sex and the City.” She was Dolores the Realtor in “Wall Street” and the 2010 sequel. Off screen, Miles was known for her love of the New York City nightlife and was a favorite of the paparazzi.

Sylvia seemed to enjoy her life to the full. She was blessed with a relatively long life. There are many who miss her, so she mustve been a good friend. To all of her family and friends may you have peace, hope, and comfort from God. (Jeremiah 29:11)

Sylvia Miles did a great job in her role as Jackie Diamond on the former soap opera All My Children in the summer of 1982. I even spoke with her on the phone once. Very nice person, willing to take time out of her busy schedule to have a cup of coffee with me. Something happened on my end, and did not happen.

I was saddened to hear this past Wednesday that my friend Sylvia passed away. I will miss her. I will always have the fond memories: eating dinner with her at Sardi's at her usual table (under her portrait); when we toured the King Tut Exhibit; having lunch at the small cafe near her apartment at Columbus Circle; watching her perform at the Norman Mailer House in Provincetown ; escorting her to parties in Manhattan; etc.

I will miss sending her cards and letters every year at Christmas, Thanksgiving, Valentines Day, St Pattys Day, Halloween, Easter/Passover and her birthday.

I will miss our talks on the phone and her passion for acting.

Sylvia had a unique sense of humor and style all her own. She is a one-of-a-kind and NYC will not be the same without her.

May you rest in peace my friend -Joe

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years. Sylvia living to the age of 94 was really remarkable.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile to your face and joy in your heart. Hoping that your cherished memories sustain you along with the love and support of all of your family and friends.

Sylvia, I aways enjoyed chatting with you on 57th st. It was at Duane Reade that you asked me to help you find Crazy Glue and Flair markers. When I told you how much I love your film HEAT you were surprised and asked, "You mean you can rent that from the video store!?" I was taking friends from out of town around NYC and one said, "I wish we would see a movie star." I looked around and who do you think was coming down 57th St? What synchronicity! You were there at the right time!

Sylvia, you stole the screen in every film you appeared in! Big stars must have appreciated the value you gave to every movie. And your voice - let's agree it was so unique it took over - it is in my memory forever and brings a smile when I hear it, whether onscreen or in my mind. Blessings to an actress who even gave profanity some class!
