Larry Todd Petersen, a man known for his generous spirit, skilled hands, and the warmest of smiles, passed away on June 12, 2025, in Deadwood, S D.. Born to Melvin and Virginia (Swolley) Petersen on April 10, 1966, in Atlantic, Larry's life journey was marked by love, hard work, and the joy he found in the simplest of things. He was 59 years old.
Larry's early years were spent in Exira, where he graduated from Exira High School with the class of 1985. His passion for mechanics was evident from a young age, and he dedicated his life to mastering the trade. As a skilled diesel mechanic, Larry had a magical touch that could make any engine roar to life. His talents extended to trucks, cars, motorcycles, and anything else that required mechanical expertise. After his graduation, he moved to Audubon, where he became a well-known figure in the community for his friendly spirt and his ever-ready willingness to lend a hand.
He was united in marriage with Shannon (Musfeldt) Nicholson. The couple was blessed with three beautiful children: Brooke, Cole, and Carlee. Although his first marriage ended, Larry found love again and married Audrey Smith, expanding his family to include her two sons, Lucas and Matthew. Larry's heart had a boundless capacity for love, and in his later years, he found companionship with Amber Kruse.
Family was the cornerstone of Larry's life. He cherished every moment with his children: his daughter Brooke Petersen (Seth) and their children Talan, Tayvyn, Tayzlee; his sons Lucas Smith-Petersen and Matthew Smith-Petersen (Morgan); and his son Cole Petersen (Breanna) and their daughter Piper. His beloved dog Diesel was also a constant source of joy and companionship. Larry's siblings, Melvin Petersen Jr (Linda), JoAnn James, Rodney Petersen (Mona), David Petersen (Jodi), Scott Petersen, Judy Sandbothe (Bill), Kenny Petersen (Amy), and Dennis Petersen (Karla), along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends, will forever hold his memory dear. His parents, Melvin and Virginia, and his daughter Carlee Petersen, preceded him in death.
Larry's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He enjoyed a good ride on his Harley Davidson, feeling the wind on his face and the freedom of the open road. He found solace in gardening and taking care of his lawn. Fishing was a pastime that allowed him to revel in the tranquility of nature. However, his true pride and joy were his grandchildren, with whom he spent as much time as possible, sharing stories, laughter, and his love for tinkering in the garage.
Those who knew Larry will remember him as a friendly soul who never hesitated to share his talents and time. He was the embodiment of generosity, always ready to help a neighbor or a friend in need. His handy nature meant he was often called upon to fix something, and he did so with a smile, knowing that each repaired item was a problem solved for someone he cared about.
Larry Todd Petersen's legacy is one of love, laughter, and the enduring bonds of family and friendship. His life was a testament to the beauty of giving, the joy of living, and the impact one person can have on the lives of many. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
