Mae E. Britt, 89, of Sheffield, died on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at Manor Court at Liberty Village, Princeton, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded and private services will take place at a later date. Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremation Services, Cambridge, is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorial may be made to Abilities Plus or First United Church of Christ, Sheffield.
Born July 14, 1936 in Williamson County, IL (Carbondale/Marion area), to William H. Dunaway and Essie Mae (Burklow) Dunaway. She moved to Ullin, IL, a small community in Southern Illinois, at age 4. Mae attended public schools in Ullin, graduating from Ullin High School in1953. She married Bobby Joe Britt in 1956. Mae and Bob had attended the same school, and had known each other since they were in the 2nd grade. He preceded her in death on December 3, 2023.
Mae had worked for the United States Postal Service and was appointed Postmaster of Neponset. She retired on October 1, 2000. She was a member of First United Church of Christ, Sheffield; American Legion Auxiliary, Sheffield; and the National Association of Postmasters. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, golf, playing bridge, and traveling.
Mae is survived by her children, Mike (Dee) Britt, and Brenda (Brent) Heavener; grandchildren, Terry Smith, and Aubrey (Corey) Wood; great-grandchildren, Noah, Jaxon, Lillian, and Emersyn; sisters, Doris Keller, Anna, IL, and Carolyn (Jim) Newell, Tamms, IL; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and grandson, Logan Innis.
