Charisse Pappas Obituary

Pappas, Charisse Ann

September 15, 1956 - August 3, 2025

Charisse Pappas, 68, of Jefferson City, MO., died on Aug. 3, 2025. She was born on Sept. 15, 1956, in St. Louis, MO., to parents Bette Pappas (nee Koprivica) and Theodore A. Pappas.

Charisse completed a B.A. in sociology with a minor in journalism at the University of Missouri and an M.A. in gerontology at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. She was always grateful for her time in San Antoniothe stipend that allowed her to acquire her M.A.; the vastness, beauty and colors of the geography; and the bi-cultural setting.

Following graduation, Charisse worked in radio and co-founded the Lakeshore Times, a direct mail weekly in St. Charles County that provided opportunities in desktop publishing for young designers. Charisse managed elder housing in Chicago and Austin and took very seriously the responsibilities of caring for other people's parents. The desire to be available to her own parents as they aged brought her back to Missouri, where she worked for the Missouri Division of Aging and Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) in Jefferson City. In the DHSS Director's office, she finally combined her journalism and gerontology expertise as she highlighted the contributions of older Missourians.

Charisse (under the pen name C.C. Rising) wrote an award-winning book, The Camel and the Scorpion. It was about the first American to be arrested for espionage against the State of Israel. She also loved playing the guitar. She learned in her teens and then picked it up again at 50. She expressed gratitude for her guitar teacher, who opened whole new vistas for her. Charisse co-wrote three songs: "Mijo Maestro," a tribute to her guitar teacher; "Peter Peter," about a member of an amateur musical group she joined; and "Pure Love," an expression of gratitude for the unconditional love she received from her loved ones even as her health declined. Charisse considered it one of her greatest blessings to have an identical twin to talk to throughout her life who always understood her. She reflected this appreciation by consistently reaching out to others with kindness.

Charisse is survived by her wife, Catherine R. Edwards; her twin sister, Cynthia Pappas; her sister Candace Simmons; five nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and -nephews. Her parents and a brother, Theodore "Stacy" Pappas, preceded her in death.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Pappas family and friends. What a beautiful song that Charisse wrote. It´s a beautiful tribute to the love of those that surrounded her and the loving heart she clearly had for those in her life.

I remember Cynthia and Charisse from Mason Ridge. I was lucky to see the house without a front door. I´ve been a FLW fan ever since. So sorry to hear of the loss of such a special person.

I didn´t know Charisse but we were both members of the class of 1974 at Park West Senior high. It sounds like she lived a very interesting life. Also sounds like she was cut out specifically for the passion she had in her adulthood along with dedication to those who needed assistance in their golden years, like she took care of her parents. My condolences to her family.

It is hard to capture Charisse in words. Kind, compassionate, gentle, funny, humble, wise, and a very loyal friend.
I was truly honored to have an office next to hers at DHSS. We worked on senior well- being reports and outreach together. I had the immense privilege to read her book early on, offering edits, reflecting how humble she was. I have rarely known someone so deeply calm, humble and kind to everyone, the earth and all its beings.
Thank you for welcoming me as your work neighbor and friend, Charisse. May you be exactly where you want to be in the universe. With love and respect.

Eleven months ago, Char and I began Wednesdays with Char for 30 minutes to an hour. My wife joined us as often as she could. We would talk of many things, I would play my uke and sing songs she requested. It culminated very recently when Cyn was present and she recorded my rendition of Pure Love and Marsha´s song Appreciation. We bonded even more deeply. We love Char and will miss her physical presence even as we feel her spirit. Rest in Peace, my friend, or buzz around the other dimension sharing your great love.

Charisse, or "Char" as we called her, was a true friend. She exemplified kindness, one of the best human traits, as well as thoughtfulness and wisdom. We played music together on our lunch breaks at DHSS and later in the SloJam group. My husband Dick and I visited her many times during hospice and had many wonderful discussions. We will miss her much.
Pleasant journey, Dear One!

Charisse, or "Char" as we called her, was a true friend. We played music together on our lunch break at DHSS. She was kind, which is one of the greatest attributes a human can own. She was thoughtful and appreciative, a wise one. My husband Dick and I visited her often, sometimes weekly, while she was in hospice, and had wonderful discussions. We will miss her much.
Pleasant journey, Dear One,
