Terry Herring Obituary

Terry Wayne Herring, Sr., 78, of Vidor, Texas, passed peacefully with loved ones by his side on July 2, 2025, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his daughter, Callie and her husband, Randall Lavergne, of League City, Texas; his son, Stephen Todd Herring of LaBelle, Texas; grandchildren, Thomas Lavergne, Katherine Lavergne, Briana Herring, Stephen Herring, Haleigh Herring, Chelsea Herring, Tyler Herring, Daniel Rubero, Christina Rubero, Lyndsey Walton; and 17 great-grandchildren; sisters-in law, Brenda Cantella, Roxanne Jenkins, Kay Holloway and her husband, Perry, Diane Buoy and her husband, Mike, Jeanette Willett, and Debbie Herring; brothers-in-law, Wayne Woolwine and his wife, Wilma, Carroll Woolwine, and Roger Woolwine; a host of amazing nieces, nephews, and their families. Terry is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Sylvia Woolwine Herring; his brother, Samuel Herring; his daughter, Toni Rubero; and his son, Terry Herring, Jr.

Terry was born on February 21, 1947, to LB and Birdie Abel Herring. He was raised in Belzoni, Mississippi, and even served as Deputy Sheriff for the town at one point. He graduated from Belzoni High School, where he would be quick to let you know that he won awards in both Latin and Chemistry. He would visit Belzoni frequently for his high school reunions, the annual Catfish festival, and to visit with family and friends.

In his adult life, Terry had many jobs and ventures, including obtaining his pilot's license, working in the oil field, selling Volkswagens, and servicing office equipment, the last of which led to meeting his wife, Sylvia, who was working as a bookkeeper in a law office. Ultimately, Terry began installing floors, and his hard work gave rise to his own company, Custom Flooring, in which he took great pride. Custom Flooring quickly grew from a small flooring department in OCBM, to one of the most widely known and respected commercial flooring businesses in Southeast Texas and beyond. Terry was widely respected in the flooring industry and known for his professionalism, honesty, integrity, and kind personality. He touched many lives throughout his years, leaving behind many cherished memories and a lasting legacy.

Outside of work, Terry enjoyed playing golf and softball, doing Sudoku and crossword puzzles (occasionally while driving, which is another story entirely), attending Lamar Basketball and Astros games, and watching sports, game shows, and Westerns. He was also very passionate about music, serving as the song leader for Grace Baptist Church in Vidor for many years, and joining the Singing Men of Southeast Texas to sing barbershop music at events ranging from intimate events at Rao's bakery all the way to Astros baseball games.

Terry was an endlessly loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. He made it a point to be kind and understanding to everyone he came in contact with. He wasn't a man of many words, but when he did speak, people wanted to listen. His dry wit could draw a smile from even the most stoic people, and the gentle wisdom he gave in small interactions and deep heart-to-heart conversations was priceless. He had a youthful smile and contagious laugh that reflected the genuine warmth with which he approached life.

The family would like to express their thanks for the many years of love, kindness, and support for Terry and his wife Sylvia, as well as for Custom Flooring, the business they poured their lives into.

Terry is at peace; we will carry his memory, with honor, forever in our hearts. And, with a little luck, the love and wisdom he shared will carry forth into the lives of all he came in contact with.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, P.O. Box 5014 Hagerstown, Maryland 21741 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, Maryland 21741.
