Jane Smith Obituary

Jane Cannon Smith of Birmingham passed away on July 3, 2025, at the age of 101. Jane was born in Atlanta, GA, the younger daughter of Fred E. Cannon and Sarah Parham Cannon, on December 19, 1923. She grew up in Charlotte, NC, and Winston-Salem, NC, where she attended Salem College. During World War II, she returned to Atlanta, where she attended Oglethorpe University, worked at Retail Credit Corporation (now Equifax), and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. In 1946, she married Air Force Captain W. Jack Smith.

Jane, Jack and their three children moved to Orlando, FL, and then Birmingham, AL, in the 1950's. They settled in Vestavia, where Jane was a homemaker and active in the Episcopal church, Girl Scouting, and many civic organizations.

She enjoyed bridge, travel, reading, poetry, puzzles, golf, tennis, genealogy, volunteer work and the Atlanta Braves. In later years, she volunteered for the Red Cross, Bridge Ministries, 55th Place Thrift Shop, Oak Mtn Ministries, and Grandview Hospital. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

As an Episcopalian, Jane most recently attended St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She was always active in parish life, serving as Junior Warden in an Atlanta parish.

Jane was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Jack Smith, and son Richard Erle Smith. She is survived by her daughters Laura (Patrick) Doumont and Nancy Smith Corona of Birmingham, five grandchildren – Brian Smith and Aaron Smith of Denver, CO, Amanda Smith of Memphis, TN, Elizabeth Corona (Brandon) Long of New Orleans, LA, and Alex (Vivian Yeilding) Corona of Birmingham, and two great-grandchildren – Grigs Long and Sam Long of New Orleans, LA.

Jane lived a long and happy life, touching many people along the way. She will be missed. Her family appreciates the staff at Somerby One Nineteen, other caregivers and her friend Amy Easton.

A family service will be held at a later date, with burial at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 3736 Montrose Road, Mountain Brook, AL 35213 or your favorite charity.

Jane and Jack were our friends at St. Luke's for many years. She and I were active members of Searchers for a long time where she sometimes made a Hummingbird cake for us! We traveled together in the early 1970's to England to visit Conventry Cathedral and other sites. That trip was planned by the Diocese after the Provost/Dean of that cathedral visited St. Luke's. I have not seen Jane for a long time, yet I have happy memories of her that go back a long way! My sincere sympathy to all her family.
