Sharon Bopp Obituary

Sharon Anne Bopp, 86

Sharon Anne Bopp passed away unexpectedly on February 14, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida, following complications from a short-term illness. At 86, Sharon remained vibrant with a great sense of humor and interest in many things.

Sharon was born on January 14, 1939, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho to Catherine (Eckman) and Clair Carlson. Tragically, Clair contracted tuberculosis and died shortly after Sharon's second birthday, leaving her mother to care for Sharon and her baby sister, Mary Kay. Together, they moved to Ponderay, Idaho to live with Catherine's father, Clark Eckman. Five years later, Catherine married Jack Bopp, who adopted Sharon and Mary Kay, and the family moved to Sandpoint, ID. The family welcomed four more children: Therese, Michele, William (Billy), and Patrice (Patsy).

A bright and ambitious student, Sharon graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1957, where she was active in the pep club, Palmer's Packrat, and Girl's League. She attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington for two years. In her sophomore year, she joined a mission trip, teaching kindergarten in Nome, Alaska. It was there she met Joseph Unterwagner. They were married and had their first son, Joseph (Joe), in 1962. Shortly after, they moved to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, where they welcomed three more children: Thomas (Tom), Gregory (Greg), and Darrick.

Sharon began her career in real estate and quickly established herself as a very successful agent. After relocating to Marietta, Georgia, she became a Million Dollar Agent while working for Johnny Isaksson at Northside Realty.

Later, she and her second husband, Robert Carver, followed their shared passion for hospitality and good food and opened Carver's Country Kitchen in Atlanta. This hole-in-the-wall gem became a local institution, earning features in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Magazine, and the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Sharon dedicated much of her life to the restaurant, creating a welcoming environment with exceptional Southern food and a community of regulars who made weekly trips in for her famous Coca-Cola Cake and "Dolly Pardon" Chicken Breasts. All the desserts could be found under the "Vegetables" section of the menu. She closed the restaurant in 2013 after Robert's passing, and moved to Yulee, Florida to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Sharon's greatest joy in her life was her family and friends, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Her second greatest joy was television and film, and she spent much of her time watching every new release across many streaming platforms.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Carver, her parents, Jack and Catherine Bopp, and Clair Carlson, and her sister, Therese Bopp.

She is survived by her loving siblings, Mary Kay of Boise, Michele Winkler (Roger) of Atlanta, Bill Bopp (Rayna) of Sandpoint, and Patrice Olin (Doug) of Sandpoint and her four sons, Joe Unterwagner of East Dublin, GA, Greg Unterwagner of St. Simons Island, Tom Unterwager (Steve) of Denver, and Darrick Unterwagner (Sunshine) of Brunswick, GA. She was a proud grandmother to Justin Unterwagner (Cate) of Sarasota, Florida, Evan Unterwagner (Chrissy) of Jacksonville, FL, Bryce Unterwager (Delainey) of St. Leonard, MD, Bailey Unterwagner (Abby Rae) of Brunswick, and Eli Unterwagner of Brunswick. She became a great grandmother to Finn Unterwagner in 2025. She also leaves behind several cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

The Rosary will be said at 10:00 am, July 17, 2025, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sandpoint, Idaho. Following the Rosary, Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 am with Father Rob Cook officiating. Interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Humane Society.
