Mary Koepke Obituary

Mary Koepke, 98, formerly of Ross, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, at Lutheran Senior Life Passavant Community, Zelienople, where she had resided since 2001.
Born Mary Bernice Aeberli to Helen Hoon Aeberli and Howard Aeberli in Pittsburgh, she was a late Christmas present. She graduated from Oliver High School and attended Carnegie Tech as an art major. Mary married Howard Koepke on June 28, 1949. She was a fine artist, writer, homemaker and, when the nest was empty, she returned to school, earning an English degree from LaRoche College.
Mary and Howard raised their family in the North Hills. Mary was a member of the North Hills Art Center, where she took classes and exhibited her watercolors, and Northmont Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school.
Her involvement in several writers' groups, including the St. Davids Christians Writers' Conference, led to awards for and publication of her pieces. In later days, she continued to enjoy crocheting, photography, writing and art classes at Passavant Community. Her involvement in the formation of campus wide prayer groups was a result of her deep faith.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Howard and Bill; and husband, Howard, in 2006.
Surviving are her children, Elaine Fry, Kurt Koepke and ChrisAnn Goossen (Robert); and grandchildren, Christopher Fry, Matthew Caulfield and Nicholas Goossen.
KOEPKE - There will be no calling hours for Mary Koepke, who died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025. A private graveside service will be held at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

When I search my memories of Mary, I see a refined, talented, intelligent woman.  Smartly dressed even on a Saturday at home.

I see me sitting next to her daughter, Chris, my best friend, in the back seat of the family car. We were young teenagers. Annoying at times, lots of times, with our snickering and bickering.
Mary called me Sister Sal because Chris and I loved and fought like sisters. She also called me BigSal, which I didn't like so much but I know she said it out of love.

When Mary would catch my reflection in the car visor mirror as I watched her carefully apply her bright red lipstick, she´d smile at me. I´d shyly look away.

Chris´s dad drove us on many adventures to cut down Christmas trees or to Pymatuning to go camping. Wherever we were going, Mary made me feel welcome.

I admired her artistic gifts and was fascinated by how those gifts grew in her daughter Chris.  Mary had an infectious smile and a laugh that I still hear in her daughter's voice.

Mary, Mom Koepke, thank you for the love and acceptance you showed this awkward, emotional, and goofy teenager so long ago. Thank you for bringing me on so many adventures that shaped and enriched my adolescence all those years ago.  I am forever grateful.

I will now think of you in heaven, for you were a believer, sitting in a folding camping chair next to the love of your life, Howard. I will joyfully watch as your daughter turns your life well lived into a beautiful legacy.

With love,
Sister Sal
