Hermann Denzinger Obituary
Hermann Denzinger SANTA FE, NM - Hermann Josef Denzinger, a gifted architect whose tenacious work ethic left a lasting imprint on communities throughout South Carolina, passed away on June 29, 2025, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was 87 years old. Mr. Denzinger was a co-founder of Thomas & Denzinger, Architects, a respected firm with offices in Beaufort and Charleston. Born near Stuttgart, Germany, Hermann pursued his early architectural studies at the School of Fine Arts in Berlin. There he met his future wife, Marlene, who also became an accomplished architect and worked along his side until her untimely death in 1998. Together they shared a lifelong devotion to the profession of architecture. After earning his first master's degree in Berlin, Hermann continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied and worked alongside the renowned architect, Louis I. Kahn. The experience profoundly influenced his design philosophy and fueled his commitment to excellence. In 1974, Hermann came to South Carolina with Marlene and their daughter, Mascha. Over the next five decades, he approached his work with remarkable energy, discipline, and determination, applying his talents to an array of residential, commercial, institutional, government, and military projects. His later career focused especially on public schools and community centers in the Charleston area, including significant work for the Charleston County School District and the City of Goose Creek. His designs were honored with numerous awards from the American Institute of Architects and other professional organizations, reflecting the high standards he brought to every project. After retiring, Hermann moved to Santa Fe, where he returned to his lifelong interest in painting, a pursuit he had first explored before discovering his vocation in architecture. In his Santa Fe studio, he worked with the same intensity and passion that had defined his architectural career, painting prolifically until the end of his life. Hermann is survived by his daughter, Mascha Denzinger of Santa Fe, NM; and his two youngest brothers, Klaus and Michael Denzinger, both residing in Germany. A funeral service and interment of ashes will be held on July 30, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston.
