Virgil Spencer Obituary

Virgil Stewart "Stu" Spencer

August 27, 1941 - July 4, 2025

Spotsylvania, Virginia - Virgil Stewart "Stu" Spencer, 83, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025.

A longtime resident of Charlotte, NC, Fairfield, CT, and Spotsylvania, VA, Stu was the devoted husband of 57 years to Marlenah Spencer, the love of his life and his truest companion, whom he cherished above all else.

Stu was the son of the late Virgil and Edna Spencer of Charlotte, NC. He was a proud and loving father to Jeb Stewart Spencer, Jesse Wolf Spencer (and wife Juliet Spencer), and Lela Spencer Aldridge (and husband Jon Aldridge). He was also a deeply proud grandfather to Max, Abby, Emma, Casady, and Dimitry Spencer, as well as Stewart and Scarlett Aldridge.

Stu was born with a sharp mind and wit, a direct manner and a fierce sense of loyalty. He was caring, focused, and wholly committed to his family and the principles he lived by. His values were clear: do things right the first time, and always believe in your ability to achieve your best and exceed expectations.

He earned degrees from Duke University (BS), the University of North Carolina (MBA), and Pace University (MS), and went on to build a distinguished 30-year career at General Electric, working in the company's audit and taxation division before his retirement. He was recognized by General Electric for his dedication and integrity. Stu also worked at Century 21 after moving to Spotsylvania, VA, where he was a resident of the Fawn Lake community.

He is survived by his wife Marlenah; his children and their spouses; his sister Linda Goshorn; and his beloved grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, integrity, and quiet determination.

Stu's wisdom, humor, and unwavering presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

I think everyone in the class of `59 knew Stu. What I remember most was his humility and quick wit.
GOD bless his family and give them comfort during this tough time.

Stewart will be missed. We grew up together at St. John's Baptist Church. His mother and dad were close friends of my parents, Larry and Virginia Moore, and his dad was my most memorable Sunday school teacher. God is blessing his family.

I have not seen Stewart in many years. He sat in the desk behind me for several classes. His integrity and wit were as described. He will be remembered and missed by many. ( Margaret) Smith Tyson

Stewart - as we called him - was just like that in all the school years (elementary through Central High School, class of '59). Everyone admired, loved him, and wanted to be his friend. Deepest sympathies to his family in this interim time until we meet again.

Stu was a fantastic neighbor and friend. We lived 2 doors down from them and our dogs loved to meet and greet their labradoodles as much as possible. Always a kind man. Stu will be missed.
