Dorothy Schauber Obituary
Mrs. Dorothy Cahall "Dottie" Schauber (née Spies), age 87, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, in Bel Air, Maryland. Born on November 25, 1937, in Easton, Maryland, Dottie lived a life marked by dedication to her family, her community, and her faith.
After graduating from high school, Dottie embarked on a career in telecommunications. She held supervisory positions with several telephone companies that would eventually become part of what is known today as Verizon. Her professional journey reflected her strong work ethic and leadership abilities during a time of great change and innovation in the communications industry.
Beyond her career, Dottie was deeply committed to serving others. She volunteered at Modern Maturity in Dover, Delaware-a role she cherished not only for the opportunity to give back but also for the connections it brought into her life. One memorable moment included meeting Rue McClanahan from the beloved television show "The Golden Girls," a highlight that reflected Dottie's warm personality and love for people.
A devoted member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Dover, Delaware, Dottie found joy and purpose in supporting her church family. She lovingly baked bread for communion and took time to write heartfelt cards to those who needed encouragement or comfort-small gestures that left lasting impressions.
Family was at the heart of everything Dottie did. Though she did not have children of her own, she embraced the roles of mother and grandmother to many nieces, nephews, and stepchildren. Her home was often the center of joyful gatherings-summer pool parties filled with laughter and festive Christmas celebrations that brought everyone together. Staying connected with loved ones was one of Dottie's greatest priorities.
Dottie was predeceased by her parents, Elmer Lorenzo Spies Sr. and Doris Pardoe Spies; her brothers Elmer Lorenzo Spies Jr., Thomas Edward Spies Sr., Robert Spies, John "Butch" Spies, and Howard Alvin Spies; her sister Shirley Dalton; and by both of her husbands-William T. Cahall and William Bradford Schauber.
She is survived by her brother William Alfred "Al" Spies. Her legacy also lives on through the many nieces, nephews, stepchildren, and friends who were touched by her kindness and generosity.
May the memory of Mrs. Dorothy "Dottie" Schauber bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. Her life will be honored at a Memorial Service on September 13, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Andrews Lutheran Church 425 North DuPont Highway, Dover, Delaware 19901.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Delaware Veterans Trust Fund, Dover Interfaith Mission and/or Code Purple for Kent County.
