Herbert Little Obituary

Herbert Little

Concord, NH - Herbert E. "Herb" Little died on the evening of July 6, 2025, at Havenwood Heritage Heights in the room he shared with his loving wife Debby who was, as always, by his side. He was 97 years old having been born on September 27, 1927, in Walpole, NH to the late Earl H. and Isabelle (Nelson) Little. Herb was also predeceased by his youngest daughter, Virginia Tocci.

Shortly after his birth his parents moved their family to Concord where he grew up, raised a family, built a long and successful career and volunteered in numerous programs and projects to strengthen the community he loved.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Deborah Seavey Little, his sister Geraldine Strachan of Bow and Concord, daughter Kathleen McGlathery and her husband Douglas of Reading MA, sons Gerald and his wife Heidi of Weare, NH and Allen of Portland, ME, grandchildren Lindsay Baker, Benjamin and Jacob Weeman, Andrew and Michael McGlathery, Hannah Little and great grandchildren Baerett and August Baker, Landon and Kinsley Weeman and Louise and Ada McGlathery.

Herb was a graduate of Concord High School, the University of New Hampshire and the American Institute of Banking. He was a World War II era veteran of the U.S. Navy. He spent over 50 years working for one employer – Merrimack County Saving Bank in Concord. He was very devoted to The Merrimack and the community it serves, starting as a bank teller in 1951 and advancing throughout his career to become President and Chairman of the Board.

Herb sat on numerous boards and committees that serve the greater Concord region. Notably for St. Paul's Church, the Concord Hospital and the Capital Region Healthcare Corporation, Family Financial Counseling Services the Rotary Club of Concord, the NH Association of Savings Banks and the NH Bankers Association, the NH and Northern New England Schools of Banking and the NH Business Development Corporation. He served as a Director of the Manufacturers and Merchants Insurance Co., Phenix Mutual Insurance Co. and the Capital Fire Insurance Co. Herb was a strong advocate for the NH Community Loan Fund and was instrumental in the creation of what is now the NH Higher Education Assistance Foundation. Herb took great pride and satisfaction from his volunteer work with many friends on the fundraising and renovation work crews that turned the old Capitol Theater into today's Capitol Center for the Arts.

Before moving to Havenwood in 2010 Herb lived for 55 years on Rockingham St. In Concord's South End in the home he and Debby bought shortly after they were married and renovated lovingly through the years. They raised their family there and hosted many family celebrations and gatherings here as well as at the family cottage he built beginning in 1963 on Deering Lake. Like everything Herb did, it was built very well and remains the favorite family gathering spot for "Grampa's Chicken" barbecues and summer get-togethers.

In retirement Herb and Deb enjoyed traveling the world together and spent many happy days with the Runnels, Windhausens and other dear friends either cooking dinner for each other or attending film festivals in Montreal and Toronto.

Services will be held on Friday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Paul's Church in Concord NH. There will be a reception following the service at the church. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to either St. Paul's Church, the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund or the Capital Center for the Arts.

I grew up two houses away from the Littles on Rockingham Street. Mr & Mrs Little were so close to all of us Petermans. I think I was in first grade when Debby called my mother to come over quickly and watch baby Ginny for Debby to take Kathy and Jerry to meet Herb at the ER where the kids were treated. Both my boys used Herb´s mother recipe for Spiced Pecans at their weddings. I enjoyed also going to Deering Lake (before the cabin was built). I still remember my phone number AND the Littles--the only two I recall. My and my sister,Joanne´s, sympathies to the families.

Many years ago, when I worked part time for N.H. Business Development Corporation, I had the pleasure to work with Mr. Little. A kind, gracious man I will always remember. Could always count on him for great advice. My deepest condolences to his family. Most Respectfully, Sandra L. Morrison

My deepest sympathy to Herb´s family. His friendly face, while sitting in the lobby of Merrimack Savings Bank, was what greeted me and my wife when we moved to Concord in 1971. The presence of a Bank President out in the open of the lobby created a feeling of "welcomeness" that was unique and genuine and continued throughout the years I called upon Herb for assistance in financial matters. He was a gem in the community and will not soon be forgotten!
May your memories of him provide peace at this time of loss.
