Abe Hildebrand, Jr. Obituary

Abe "Pete" A. Hildebrand Jr., a kind and loving soul, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, at the age of 101. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on October 4, 1923, Pete was the beloved son of the late Abe A. Hildebrand Sr. and Annie Allen. Pete was known for his warm heart, gentle spirit, and his gift for storytelling. He loved sharing vivid tales from his life, always bringing smiles and laughter to those around him. As a young man, Pete worked at A&P during high school before proudly serving his country as a United States Marine during World War II. Stationed in the Pacific, where he contributed to the efforts that shaped the course of history. His career continued at Cogging Motors, where he sold cars with honesty and charm, and later with the United States Postal Service as a rural carrier, a role he held with dedication until his retirement. Pete was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Edna Newton Hildebrand; and eight siblings: Lelia North, Doris Hall, Louis "Byrd" Hildebrand, Catherine "Kitty Ree" Hildebrand, Martha Weaver, Forrest Hildebrand, and Infant Hildebrand. He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who will carry forward his memory, his stories, and the warmth he brought into their lives. The family extends special thanks to his caring neighbors: Earl and Laverne McCauley along with the staff at The Colonnades for the compassion and support they provided in his later years. Visitation will be held at Hill and Wood Funeral Services- Charlottesville on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. A graveside service will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Pete's legacy is one of kindness, integrity, and quiet strength. He touched many lives with his generosity and unwavering support, and he will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in his name.

Yesterday

I have been a new Colonnades Health Center patient and was very fortunate to sit with "Abe" as his health began to fail. He became for me a delightful meal companion in the very short time I knew him and became someone whom I missed as his health became more fragel. He welcomed family visitors and as the days passed he shared with us all his life more fully.
As I reflect on my time at the Colonnades "Pete" will remain a memory of the stories of Charlottesville, his life growing up here and his remembrances of a constantly changing community that we both love and loved. Thank you Abe Hildebrand Jr., for being my seatmate and sharing with many of us your life of caring and remembrances.

I worked with Pete and other family members of his delivering mail at the post office. Such a pleasure to have known him. My prayers are with all of the family.
