Sally Anyan Obituary

Born June 7, 1943, to Meredith Jean and Charles Augustus Bishop in Baltimore City, Maryland, Sally Jane Anyan died March 5th. Sally grew up in Cockeysville and, after graduating from Towson High School, she attended West Virginia Wesleyan College, earning a B.A. degree with an emphasis in musical performance, specializing in the organ and harpsichord. There, she met Joel R. Anyan, and they were married on January 8, 1966, at the Episcopal Church of St. Michael and All Angels in Baltimore. They moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut, where Sally became a music teacher in the Danbury Public Schools, teaching there for 38 years. Joel and Sally were amicably divorced in 2004. In Ridgefield, Sally served from 1988 to 1999 on the Music Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut. She served on the board of trustees for the Danbury Museum & Historical Society from 1966 to 2001, where she developed their collections relating to American composer Charles Edward Ives and the American classical singer Marian Anderson. From 1990 to 1992, Sally served as President of the Connecticut chapter of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, advancing innovative approaches in music education pioneered by the composer Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman. Sally retired from teaching in 2005 and moved to Timonium, Maryland. She joined the Daguerreian Society and served as its vice president from 2009 to 2013, when she became president, and then chairman in 2014. Sally was preceded in death by her two sisters, Janet Louise Baxter and Meredith "Jeanne" Fagan. She is survived by three nieces - Susan McGee, Anne Ogren, and Sarah Ropper - and three nephews - Scott Dunn, Tom Baxter, and Mark Dunn. She is remembered fondly by her family and many friends, including Richard O. Titus, who shared her love for early photography.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 5, at 11 o'clock at Sherwood Episcopal Church, 5 Sherwood Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030. Online condolences may be sent to the family through www.peacefulalternatives.com.
