Mieko was a beautiful, warm, caring friend. We both were members of Rippin Run Garden Club and shared many joys with our fellow club members. Flower designs and horticulture and flower shows. And picnics and Christmas socials. Mieko was a Master Ikebana designer and she fought fellow members of the D.C. Ikebana Society to present design workshops to our local members. Her specialty was growing beautiful flowers. Quite a knowledge of herbs and plants. We enjoyed exploring geneology together thru the Greene Historical Society. And she was very proud of her husband, her son and daughter for being the best family that she could be blessed with. We took things slow so we could understand each other's English. And we would learn so much just delighting in nature and the beautiful Virginia countryside and our Blue Ridge Mountains. Always think of her when I see the magnolia trees bloom. She was very captivated by the delicate big bloom. And I recall her asking me how to preserve the bloom for a flower design.
At the time I had never cut one for a design myself. But she found expert advice from Anna Watson or Cordelia Brewer or Thelma Taylor and has perfect design at the celebration of her sons graduation. A friend makes you smile when you hear their name or they call you on the phone just to chat. We were and always will be special friends. I expect Mieko is already orchestrating the heavenly garden path for us to be greeted by one day. And we will meet and chat more.
