INGRID BRYAN Obituary

January 25, 1943 – April 30, 2025 I am immensely sad to report the peaceful death of my beloved wife, Ingrid, at our home in Markham. My partner, soulmate and best friend for more than 60 years, I miss her deeply, every minute of every day. My sadness is shared by our adored children, Karin and Feargus; their partners, Conrad and Annabelle; our grandchildren, Tristan, Imogen and Anaïs, by a wide circle of friends, and by our family dog, Winston. Ingrid was an amazing, warm, wise and friendly person, a wonderful companion who delighted in life. She loved music and literature, and took great pleasure in nature: the peeping of tree frogs, the cries of loons and the carpets of spring flowers in the forest. An enthusiastic traveller, she was fascinated by other cultures. Together, we hiked to Everest base camp, Macchu Picchu, Uluru, Mt. Sinai, Antarctica, and many other places on all seven continents. However, nothing gave her greater pleasure than family gatherings at our Haliburton cottage at Christmas, and Midsummer at our cottage in Sweden. Born in the Swedish Arctic, at Kiruna, Ingrid was brought up in southern Sweden. She completed a BA in Sheffield, England, before emigrating to Canada in 1967, where she added an MA and PhD in Economics, in Edmonton. A collegial and talented professor, administrator, mentor and an inspiring teacher, her career was mainly spent at Ryerson University in Toronto. As Chair of Economics and as Dean of Arts, she established BA and MA programmes in Economics, laid the foundation for a PhD programme, and published several influential economics books. As Professor Emerita, she added an important comprehensive analysis of global international resource sustainability: Are We Running Out? The Sustainability of the World's Resources. Ingrid is irreplaceable and her passing leaves a deep gulf of sadness for us all, but we are profoundly lucky to have had her company for more than eight decades and we will not forget her life well-lived.
