Janet Hoke Obituary

Janet Marie Felton Hoke, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at her home in Lexington, Kentucky. Born July 9, 1936, in Frederick, Maryland, she was the daughter of Holden S. and Mary Elizabeth Felton. Janet was the youngest of four sisters all of whom preceded her in death.

Janet devoted her life to her family and lived it with curiosity, strength, and joy. She married her high school sweetheart, Col. Mark L. Hoke, who preceded her in death, and together they traveled the world as he built a distinguished Army career. Through it all, Janet built a home filled with love, laughter, and adventure, raising their three children along the way.

Before her marriage, Janet earned her nursing degree from the Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, Maryland. She brought that same care and steadiness to everyone around her - not just in times of illness, but in the everyday gestures that defined her: a warm smile, a gentle touch, a clever joke, or a shared laugh at life's absurdities.

Janet faced many health challenges in her later years, yet she remained resilient and lighthearted - never bitter, always ready with a smile. Her spirit never dimmed, and her presence continued to brighten the lives of those around her.

She was lovingly supported by a circle of devoted caregivers - Desha Howell, Shantrell Washington, Emma Vasquez, Aneesah Dennis, and Rhoda Estrella - who became like family and whose compassion was a blessing to her and all who loved her.

Janet is survived by her children: Mark Hoke of Leesburg, VA; David Hoke and his wife Therese of Nicholasville, KY; and Beth and her husband Rich of Woodbridge, VA. She was a proud and joyful grandmother to Alicia of Brooklyn, NY, Brianna of Franklin, TN, and Colleen of Nicholasville, with whom she shared countless adventures and unforgettable moments.

Known affectionately as "Ma," Janet lived with a twinkle in her eye and a spirit of playfulness. She wasn't afraid to try new things, make mischief, or turn the ordinary into something fun. Her legacy is one of strength, kindness, humor, and unshakable love.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on Harrodsburg Road. A visitation will be held from 12:00 to 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick with burial to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
