Michael Murphy Obituary

Michael Louis Murphy, age 74, of Hagerstown, and formerly of Woodsboro, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2025, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Born on October 30, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Malcolm and Margaret (Kelly) Murphy. He was the devoted husband of the late Roseanne P. Murphy, who preceded him in death in 2021.

Michael proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a mechanist's mate aboard the USS Truckee, with deployments throughout the Mediterranean. After his honorable discharge, he pursued higher education and earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He dedicated nearly three decades of his professional life to the Bechtel Corporation, where his work in the nuclear energy sector took him to project sites across the globe.

A man of many talents, Michael had a passion for carpentry and spent much of his free time working with his hands. He especially enjoyed traveling alongside his beloved wife, creating lasting memories on their many adventures. He will be remembered for his distinctive sense of humor.

Michael is survived by his loving daughters and sons-in-law: Bridget Murphy and Chad Campbell of Hedgesville, WV, and Shannon and David Burke of Walkersville; his cherished granddaughter, Thea Rose Campbell; and his brothers, Frank Murphy and wife Nancy, and Tom Murphy and wife Marianne. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who will hold his memory close.

In addition to his wife and parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack Murphy and James Murphy.

A celebration of Michael's life will be held at a later date.
