William M. Anderson Jr.

William M. Anderson Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed educator, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 83.

Born in South Boston, Virginia, on January 15, 1942, to Virginia and William Anderson, Bill lived a life marked by devotion to family and an unwavering commitment to education. His legacy is most deeply felt at the University of Mary Washington, where he served with distinction as president for 23 years.

Throughout his tenure, Bill was a passionate advocate for academic excellence, faculty development, and student engagement. Under his visionary leadership, the college experienced significant growth, culminating in its transition to university status in 2004a milestone that reflected his enduring belief in the transformative power of education.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Jane Anderson; his children, Bill Anderson and his wife Kelli, Mason Booth and her husband Bret, and Harper Dawson and her husband Chris; and five cherished grandchildren: Mason, Mercer, Janie, Abby, and Will. He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements, but also for his warmth, wisdom, humor, and deep love for his family.

My very deepest condolences to Jane and family . I so appreciated your all´s support especially coming to our tennis matches during my amazing time at Mary Washington. Thanks for the leadership. Rest in peace, Dr. Anderson. With my deepest heartfelt condolences to the entire Anderson family. President Anderson provided excellent leadership at Mary Washington College. I was always in awe of the entire atmosphere at beloved Mary Washington College. President Anderson and the professors are regarded as some of my most valuable educators in my life. RIP, President Anderson.
