Evansville, WI - David Lyle Viney, Evansville, WI
July 30, 1942 - June 18, 2025
David L. Viney, 82, of the Town of Porter, passed away on June 18, 2025. A lifelong Wisconsin farmer, public servant, and devoted family man, Dave lived with quiet integrity, deep roots, and a steady sense of purpose.
He was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, the eldest of four children of Lyle and Borghild Viney. When Dave was young, the family returned to the Viney Farms homestead in rural Rock County, a place he would call home for the rest of his life. He attended the nearby one-room Lienau School, and liked to recall how he sometimes floated his lunch pail across the Badfish Creek. After graduating from Stoughton High School, he earned a degree in Dairy Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While at UW, he judged for the university's dairy team and joined Delta Theta Sigma fraternity, forming friendships that lasted a lifetime.
After college, Dave returned home to farm alongside his father and brother on the family's Brown Swiss dairy. He also helped lead Viney Farms' seed business; growing corn, oats, soybeans, and wheat and managing the apple orchard. These were not just jobs to Dave; they were ways of caring for the land, honoring family, and contributing to the community.
In 1968, Dave married Mary Kuhlow. Together they built a home marked by partnership, trust, and love. They raised two children, Jennifer and Dan, and Dave remained a guiding presence in their lives and in the lives of his grandchildren. He coached baseball, supported 4-H dairy projects, and mentored his children through their seasonal gourd and pumpkin business. He loved traveling with Mary and their family. He remained a steady presence in his children's and grandchildren's lives, always encouraging each of them to follow their own path. What he gave, he gave without ceremony: his time, his help, his presence; always dependable, always genuine.
Dave believed deeply in service. He spent more than 50 years on the Porter Town Board including decades as Chairman and 33 years as Commissioner of the Edgerton Fire District. He was a director of the Brown Swiss Cattle Association and served on the Rock County 4-H Fair Board. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock County Agricultural Hall of Fame alongside his father.
Dave lived a full, grounded life. There is more to him than any words can capture and those who knew him will recognize his story through the steadiness he brought, the values he lived by, and the way he simply kept showing up for the people and place he loved.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary; daughter Jennifer (Aaron) Schneeberger and grandchildren Raven and Tyrus Schneeberger; son Dan (Toni) and granddaughters Josie and Cecily Viney; sisters Jane (David) Grabarski and Mary Viney (Marilyn Kirk); brother Jim (Linda) Viney; many brothers and sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Borg Viney.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Albrecht Funeral Home, 1004 S. Main St., Edgerton, WI.
