Walter Leslie Crider

January 6, 1924 - July 5, 2025

He was born on January 6, 1924 at 343 South Main St., Chatham, VA to the late E. Paul Crider, Sr. and Ethel Whitehead Crider. He was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy and earned Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. He taught at Hargrave Military Academy and Climax High School and retired from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as Senior Research Scientist. He had three patents in his name, and he published more than 20 papers in scientific journals and books. His retirement years were spent on his ancestral farm in the Climax area of Pittsylvania County where he grew up and called home.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Marian Anderson Crider and Barbara Hoffman Crider; a long-time companion, Joanne Slocum; a daughter, Marian Leslie Humpherys; a brother, E. Paul Crider, Jr.; three sisters, Sallie Ryan, Louisa Culpepper and Katie Davis. He is survived by daughters, Anne Sandfort (David) of El Dorado Hills, CA, Susan Crider of Raleigh, NC, Mary Mackenzie of Durham, NC and Lucy Stephenson (Kyle) of Raleigh, NC; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren.
