Lavonna Dale Schell, affectionately known as Moms to family and dear friends, passed from her earthly home to her heavenly home on Wednesday, March 19.
Moms was born October 27, 1934, in a log cabin about ½ mile from where she lived out the vast majority of her life, to parents Lloyd and Juanita Helmlinger.
In 1954 she was married to Edward Patty and from this union her four children were born: Laurel, Greg, Kent, and Deneen.
In October 1979 she married her soulmate, Will Schell, who preceded her in death in August of 2023. After years of long, hard work at their water well drilling business, Schell Drilling, they retired in 1955. From then on, they spent many years traveling. They visited all 50 States, 8 Canadian provinces, more than a dozen foreign countries and many islands. This gave Moms the opportunity to photo document and journal their travels, with each adventure receiving its own album.
Moms was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a lifetime member of the Carroll County Master Gardeners. As both she and Pops were Master Gardeners, they devoted much sweat equity into creating their beloved Schell's Nob. Those who visited marveled at the beauty of the landscape they created. They hosted many gatherings and had several weddings performed in its beauty, beginning with their own.
Family and making memories was of utmost importance to moms. She and Pops made certain we did that as a family by organizing many family getaways. These trips included adventures both locally and also to Colorado and Hawaii. This summer will mark our 27th consecutive outing.
Moms was also preceded in death by her parents, brother Derrall Helmlinger and son Greg Patty. She is survived by brother Eldon Helmlinger and wife Linda of Berryville, daughter Laurel Ashworth, son
Kent Patty and wife Sharon, daughter Deneen Foster and husband Terry, Greg's partner Sheri, all of Berryville and step daughter Regina LeRoy of Stockton, California, grandchildren were the light of her life and they include Tyler Ashworth and wife Crystal of Berryville, Destiny Osnes and husband Jarred of Harrison, Ciera Foster of Springfield, Missouri and Darby Foster of Berryville. If her grandchildren meant that much, you can only imagine what her great grands meant. They include Mason and Annlee Ashworth of Berryville and Bently and Calvin Osnes of Harrison.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. till 7 p.m., Sunday, March 23, at Charles M. Nelson Memorial Chapel. Chapel service will be 10 a.m., Monday, March 24, at Charles M.
