Carlos Jesus Dominguez, MD

January 13, 1932 - March 6, 2025

Miami Beach, Florida - Dr. Carlos J. Dominguez, a distinguished physician, scholar, and beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025, at the age of 93, surrounded by his family.

Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1932, Dr. Dominguez demonstrated an extraordinary intellect and a passion for medicine from an early age. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Havana School of Medicine before emigrating to the United States in 1961 to continue his medical training. He completed residencies in Internal Medicine and Pathology at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, followed by a Hematology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital of New York, and ultimately dedicated his career to hematology and oncology. His expertise and leadership led to his appointment as Chief of Hematology and Co-Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Mount Sinai Medical Center on Miami Beach.

Dr. Dominguez had a profound impact on the field of medicine, not only through his private practice, which he maintained until his initial retirement in 2007, but also as a mentor and educator. His passion for teaching brought him out of retirement in 2013, when he became Director of the Hematology/Oncology Training Program at Larkin Community Hospital in South Miami. He remained in that role until 2022, when he fully retired, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, compassion, and dedication to his patients and students alike.

Beyond his medical career, Dr. Dominguez was a true renaissance man, a lifelong learner with an insatiable curiosity. An avid reader, he was deeply knowledgeable in history, philosophy, and the arts. His greatest passion outside of medicine was operahe and his wife of 54 years, Carmen Garmendia Dominguez, were devoted supporters of the Florida Grand Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. Together, they traveled the world to experience performances in legendary venues, including La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, and the Teatro Real in Madrid. Their love of the performing arts was matched by their commitment to philanthropy, supporting numerous local educational and humanitarian organizations throughout their lives.

Dr. Dominguez was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carmen. He is survived by his children, Tania Dominguez (Curtis Miner) and Carlos A. Dominguez (Melissa), and his five cherished grandchildren: Lucas, Dylan, Alessandra, Cece, and Mila. He was a man of immense integrity, deeply respected by his peers, adored by his patients, and a source of wisdom and warmth to all who knew him. Carlos will be especially remembered for his intellectual curiosity, sharp wit, infectious personality, and zest for life.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 16th from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. at Caballero Rivero Westchester. The Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, March 17th at 11 a.m. at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Coral Gables.
