Susan Waananen Obituary

Susan Delura Waananen

June 5, 1955 - August 6, 2025

Tavernier, Florida - The world grew a little dimmer on August 6, 2025, when we lost our Susie Q. A truly one-of-a-kind woman whose spirit, kindness, and fire lit up every room she entered.

Born with a dazzling smile and a head of fiery red hair that matched her vibrant personality, Susie lived her life with sparkles, sunshine and love. She was the kind of person who made strangers feel like friends and friends feel like family. Her laughter was infectious, her energy endless, and her presence truly unforgettable. You wouldn't see her without lipstick and either sparkles, glitter, pink, teal, a tutu or a tiara!

Susie was the life of the party - dressing up in costumes, food fights with grandchildren, singing karaoke, and always finding a way to make everyone around her feel her wild energy. She was genuine to her core. If you had to ask if you knew Susie, then you didn't. She was truly unforgettable!

She had a gift for bringing people together and leaving behind memories that will be cherished for a lifetime. She was bossy in the sweetest way that she could command an army with a wink and smile. Her kindness and happiness were effortless, her warmth magnetic, and her spirit unbreakable.

While our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing her light will never fade. She will live on in our laughter, our stories, and the love we carry forward in her name.

Susie is survived by husband: Kenneth Waananen, children: Donovan & Jenny Garrison, Rusty & Kristy Garrison and Jeffrey & Stephanie Frohock, 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, as well as countless friends who were blessed to have her.

Today I was so shocked to see the post on FB about Susie passing. My heart is saddened for the loss. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Susie was such a sweet, kind, loving person. She always brightened a room when she was in it. I have such fond & loving memories of this joy-filled friend. I met her when I joined ABWA many, many years ago. Those were some of the good-ole days. So thankful for the memories.

Susie and I met on an airplane from Florida to Raleigh (she was coming to stay with her granddaughter) about 6 years ago. She set her vodka bottles on my tray so I would "look like the lush!" We went to lunch that week, making sure to return in time for her to watch General Hospital. She invited my husband and I down to the Keys to stay on a family member´s houseboat, near hers, to celebrate his 60th birthday - something we´ll never forget! We especially loved when she and Kenny joined us on the top deck, in the evenings, for a drink. Although our relationship was short and distant - we had lunch one or two other times on her trips up to Raleigh - I will treasure those memories. She was a special lady - so easy to talk to, and so full of life. My husband and I send our heartfelt condolences to Kenny and her family.

To the family of our beloved Susie,
I was so heartbroken to hear about Susie's passing. She was truly a special friend tome and so many others. A true ray of sunshine, her beautiful energy touched everyone she met.
I'll never forget the laughs and adventures we shared on our girls' trips. I'm so grateful for those memories, and I will cherish them always. I'll remember her incredible eye for capturing beauty through her photography, her infectious smile that could light up any room, and her sweet, sometimes naive, spirit. She was so full of life and joy, and her absence is a heavy loss.
Please know that you are in my thoughts. I hope that the many beautiful memories you have of Susie will bring you comfort and help carry you through this incredibly sad time.
With deepest sympathy,
Gale Springer

Such a lovely written memorial and so true, comes as close to describing that marvelous Susie as you possibly could. For older people who remember the movie character Scarlett O´Hara, on first seeing Susie many years ago, I thought she could have played that movie part she was so vivacious and attractive and could she work a room at a party! The years passed, decades and we all aged, Susie did not. She was Susie as long as was physically possible. The memories she left her children and friends will be cherished. She was tiny and fragile, yet larger than life.

Oh gosh, I worked across the hallway from Susie back in the early 90's in the 381 building. She restored family photos for as well. Always smiling, laughing with such a sense of humor! My deepest sympathy to her family.
