William Otte Obituary

William Sherman Otte, 84, of Eau Claire passed away peacefully June 3, 2025, in St. Joseph.

William was born on Sept. 16, 1940, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., to Karl and Lenice (Spradling) Otte, the youngest of six children.

The family soon moved to Coloma where he grew up and where he met his wife, Roberta Blue while attending Coloma High School.

After graduating, William honed his skills at a technical school, earning a certification in pattern making. He served his country with honor in the U.S. Navy, a period of his life that he always held in high regard. His professional career as a pattern maker included dedicated years at Auto Specialties and Rockwell International, where he was respected for his meticulous work and strong work ethic. He became well-known in the community for his yard work and lawn maintenance services.

William's interests were as rich and varied as the life he led. He found solace in the tranquility of gardening, whether it was tending to his raspberries, rhubarb, hostas, or his stunning, picture-worthy flowers. His commitment to his community was evident through his volunteering efforts at Neighbor to Neighbor and driving for the hayride at Five Pines. An avid walker, William enjoyed his daily walks, often walking several miles a day. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and their many accomplishments.

His legacy continues through his five children: Faith (Dan) Dowd, Joyce (Brad) Wendzel, Hope Otte, William (Kim) Otte Jr., and Pamela (Anthony) Candiano; his 12 grandchildren: Lindy (Morris) Esmiol, Dana (Mike) Licari, Pauline Wendzel, Alyson (Alex) Grumbine, Haleigh Wendzel (Will Piepenbring), Abigayle Rockette, Hannah Rockette, William (Natalie) Otte III, Rachel Otte, Matthew (Jennifer) Candiano, Aaron Candiano and Luke Candiano; and his eight great-grandchildren: Vivian, Kirsten, Morrie, Beatrix and Sylvia Esmiol, Gibson Grumbine, Gianni Rockette-Turney and Jane Otte. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor Wellborn of Florida.

William was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Roberta (Blue) Otte; four siblings: Bette, Karl, Marlene and Gail, and his special friend, Maxine Heim.

Those wishing to donate in William's memory and honor can make memorial contributions to Neighbor to Neighbor or Five Pines Ministries.

A visitation for family and friends will take place from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. A burial with military rites will follow the visitation in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Sodus.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs.
