Joseph Monmonier Obituary

Joseph Carroll "Coach Monmonier" Monmonier V, age 53, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Born on April 2, 1972, in Baltimore, Maryland, Joe lived a life filled with purpose, passion, and unwavering devotion to his family, students, friends, and community. A proud graduate of Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, Joe forged lifelong friendships during his time there before attending Limestone University. At Limestone, he earned a full scholarship to play lacrosse as a standout goalie-an early reflection of the love for sports that would shape so much of his life. Joe began his career in education at Hilton Head Island High School as a special education teacher and lacrosse coach. His commitment, leadership, and heart soon elevated him into a broader role within the school community. Over the next two decades, he became a beloved and vital presence at Hilton Head Island High School, serving the last 13 years as the school's Athletic Director. Known affectionately by many as "Coach Monmonier," Joe was a mentor, a motivator, and a tireless advocate for student-athletes. His impact on the school and its students was deep and lasting. A passionate Baltimore Ravens fan, Joe also enjoyed staying active working out, golfing, and fishing whenever he could. His energy and humor were infectious, and he inspired those around him not only with his words but with the way he lived his life. Loyal, honest, and full of heart, Joe was the kind of friend everyone was lucky to have. Joe is survived by his loving wife, Kim Monmonier, and their two daughters, Ava and Caroline Monmonier, who were the pride and joy of his life. He is also survived by his father, Joseph Monmonier IV, of Venice, Florida; his siblings, Jason Monmonier of Joppa, Maryland; Sid Applegate of Jacksonville, Florida; and Christina Monmonier of Nashville, Tennessee; as well as his stepfather, Bruce Cisne. He was preceded in death by his mother, Michele Cisne, in 2022. He is also lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Emilee Gruber, Ellis Gruber, Jayden Bofrone, Jemma Monmonier, Andrew Kelley, Emily Jones, Riley DiGennaro, Aaron Gruber, Ross Gruber, and Croy Monmonier; his father-in-law, John Haley of the Eastern Shore, Maryland; and sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Jamie Monmonier, Julie & Scott DiGennaro. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Sauls Funeral Home in Bluffton, South Carolina, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. that same day. A Celebration of Life Honoring Coach Monmonier will follow that evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Hilton Head Island High School Stadium. All who knew him are welcome to attend and share in remembering a man who gave so much to so many. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a Venmo account established to support Kim Monmonier and her daughters during this time. Coach Monmonier' s legacy of leadership, kindness, and commitment will live on in the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. I first met Joe when I worked at the Junction 7-11 in Catonsville when he was just a kid. Years later I knew him as our varsity goalie when I coached at Mt. St. Joe and after was lucky enough to coach him at Catonsville Community College. After Limestone, he came back and we coached together at CCC and taught together at the Upton School for the next 7 years. We also spent a great deal of time socially. In all those settings over many years, Joe was always a friendly, caring guy. I don't ever remember having any cross words with him. I think a true judge of someone's character, whether they are kind, caring, trustworthy, funny and positive, is if you smile when you are with them. I haven't seen Joe in a long while since he moved to Hilton Head but I know for sure every time I was with him, I smiled.

Such a huge loss for so many that loved Joe. May his legacy live on forever and the best way to honor Joe is to love others, like he did.

My deepest condolences to Joe's family and friends. I worked with Joe many, many years ago in Ocean City, MD. His unfailing good humour and friendliness always stayed with me even across the many decades and 3000 miles. May his soul rest in peace.

Dear Kim & Family -
Words can not express how very sorry we are for your loss.
We had the pleasure of getting to know Joe for the four years he taught our son Justin in the Depaul program at Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore from 2002 - 2006, as well as serving as his lacrosse coach. His mentorship, leadership and passion for what he did always shown through, both in the classroom and on the field. He had such a positive attitude and presence about him that influenced all those around him, and he will be so sorely missed.
With our sincere sympathy and prayers for peace in the future ...
