Edgar Moore Obituary

Edgar A. Moore
08/28/1946 - 05/15/2025
Edgar A. Moore, born August 28, 1946 in Galveston, Texas, passed away on May 15, 2025 in Houston, Texas due to complications of heart disease and dementia. Edgar was proud of being a "BOI" (Born on the island), graduating from Galveston's Ball High, North Texas State College (now University of North Texas), and the University of Houston where he earned a double Masters in Music.
Edgar started his opera career while still in high school, and he sang tenor with several opera companies including Dallas Fort Worth Opera, Arizona Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and Houston Grand Opera. He particularly cherished his memories of singing in HGO's world premier production of "Nixon in China" with which he traveled to the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Edinburgh Festival. In that company he mentored a new supernumerary, Michael Ewer, and they became friends for the rest of Edgar's life.
Following his opera career, Edgar began sharing his musical expertise as a Professor of Music at San Jacinto College North, where he taught music literature, taught and conducted two choirs, and taught voice students. Edgar truly loved teaching and giving back to the community. Edgar also volunteered for the Texas Music Educators 2 Year College Conference, and he relished taking students to San Antonio to sing in the conference's 2 Year College Chorus. Edgar was also the founder and music director of the Sons of Orpheus men's choir, which performed several times at Trinity Episcopal's Organ Extravaganza and at venues around metro Houston and beyond. Edgar was also pleased to be tenor section leader in Trinity's Senior Choir for many years under the direction of now retired organist and music director Ron Wyatt.
Edgar was predeceased by his parents, John A. Moore and Willene Moore (nee Hicks). He is survived by his wife Gretchen (nee York), brother George Michael Moore (Antoinette Pacini) of Galveston, and sister Carolyn Moore Dyar of Portland, Oregon.
The family wants to thank Heights Hospice and Sycamore Creek Ranch in The Heights for taking such good care of Edgar at the end of his days.
Visitation will be on Thursday, May 22, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM., at J Levy and Termini Funeral Home, 2128 Broadway, Galveston. The funeral service will be officiated by rector Jimmy Abbott at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2216 Avenue H. Galveston, on Friday, May 23, at 11:00 AM, with a reception following in the parish hall. Interment will follow in a private ceremony at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock.

It was a beautiful funeral for Edgar.

Edgar was instrumental in our TTCCDA Choral Organization and always found great instrumentalists to accompany the All-State Choir. He was a wonderful musician and a lot of fun. He will be missed greatly.

I am saddened to hear of Edgar or as my son called him EEGAR passing. Edgar and I sang German Operette, San Jac choir, Trinity Church and taught voice at San Jac for 2 years. In addition, Edgar booked Christmas gigs for the Dickens quartet. I will miss him and his enthusiasm for music. Gretchen, I am thinking of you.

Dear Gretchen and family, I am so saddened to hear of Edgar's passing. Like his music buddy and devoted colleague Rodney, his life was too short. We will miss him and his unwavering enthusiasm for the music that human voices bring to the world. God Bless and always trust in His Mercy. Devoted,
Margaret Stenborg/Boike
