Joan Dickison Obituary

Joan Dickison
Joan Dickison, 95, a longtime resident of East Hartford, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 21, 2025, with her family by her side.
Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Louise (Henderson) Shepherd.
After World War II, Joan met navel technicians' mate, Joseph Remeika. They became part of a close-knit group of friends who all eventually married and remained lifelong companions, sharing vacations and celebrating family milestones together.
Following the birth of her second child, Joan began working as an office assistant at The Travelers in Hartford. Through talent, dedication, and perseverance, she rose through the ranks and retired at age 62 as an executive in the underwriting division.
Joan loved the beach, entertaining, and taking family vacations with friends. After the passing of her first husband, she married Russell Dickison. Together, they shared a passion for golf-even building a home within walking distance of a course. They enjoyed traveling, wintering in Florida, and spending summer vacations in Newport and New Hampshire. After Russell's passing at age 74, Joan continued the tradition of wintering in Florida and spending summers in Newport with close friends until 2020.
Joan will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Lynn Rival and husband John (Jack) of Enfield; son, Joseph Remeika Jr. and wife Cheryl of Annandale, NJ; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Jonathan Rival and wife Caitlin of Granby, and Jonathan's son Jonathan Rival-Velez of Hopkinsville, KY, Jessica Rival and Howard Bowan of Enfield, and their son Howard (Howie) Bowan, Robert Remeika and wife Jessica Fenton of Elmhurst, IL, and their son Rowan Remeika, Joseph Remeika III of Gainesville, FL. She is also survived by her extended family which includes her stepchildren, Gary Dickison of Plymouth, NH; Cheryl Salzarulo of Colchester and the late Glenn Dickison - along with their devoted spouses, children, and grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her brother, Robert Shepherd.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the ECHN hospice nurses and caregivers for their loving care during Joan's final days.
A Memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, July 28, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor, CT 06095.

Many good times were shared with your mom. Moments full of laughter, warmth, and kindness that I´ll always carry with me. She had a way of making people feel welcome, heard, and cared for. Whether it was a simple conversation, a shared meal, or just her presence in the room, she always made me feel welcome.
RIP Joan!
