June 3, 1938 - July 12, 2025

Marles M. Riessland, 87 of Kearney, died on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Brookstone Gardens in Kearney. Funeral services will be on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Amherst, Neb. Pastor Nicholas Whitney will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hot Meals USA or the Amherst Volunteer Fire Department. Please visit www.hlmkfuneral.com to leave a tribute or message of condolence. Marles was born on June 3, 1938 in Kearney, to Ernest and Bertha (Ball) Daake. She was raised in the Amherst area and attended Amherst High School, graduating with the class of 1955. She met and later married LaVern Riessland on December 20, 1954 in Kearney. Marles and LaVern farmed and raised cattle for many years in the Amherst area. Marles was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Amherst. She was active in her community as a member of the Alter Guild, Extension Club and as a volunteer for many years in the 4-H program. Marles was also a member of the American Pie Council where she was crowned the National Champion in 1999 in Boulder, Colo. The award winner was her legendary Maple Pecan Pie. Her passion was baking and teaching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to bake. Marles enjoyed participating in countless parades with her children through the years. She also enjoyed traveling throughout her retirement years with LaVern to many locations throughout the United States, often by car.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Lavern of Kearney; daughters, Karen and Jerry Hall of Elm Creek, Neb., Judy Riessland, and Sandy Riessland of Kearney, Neb.; son, Dan and Shelly Riessland of Riverdale, Neb.; brothers, John and Doug Daake of Kearney; grandchildren, Jeremy Hall (Heather), Alicia Beavers (Darin), Nathan Meier, Aaron Meier (Gina), Stephanie Penton (Patrick), Deric Riessland (Katie), Drew Riessland (Katelyn) Abby Riessland; fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews.

Marles was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Bertha Daake; brother and sister-in-law, Dick

and Delores Daake; sister-in-law, Mary Daake; and brother, Larry Daake; mother and father-in-law, Oda and Harry Riessland; brothers-in-law, Keith, Harold, Clyde, Ken and Bernard Riessland; sisters-in-law, Louella and Sharon Riessland.

I DID NOT KBOW MARLES PERSONALLY.I REMEMBER THE ARTICLE IN THE HUB ABOUT THE PIE CONTEST AND I TRIED HER CRUST RECIPE AND I AM USEING IT TO THIS DAY.I DO THE FARMERS MARKET IN KEARNEY (15 YEARS) AND SOMETIMES I MAKE PIES.I ALWAYS GET COMPLIMENTS ON THE CRUST AND I TELL THEM WHERE I GOT THE RECIPE.I STILL HAVE THE ORIGNAL ONE I CUT OUT OF THE HUB.I JUST WANTED TO SHARE MY LITTLE STORY WITH YOU.

I always remember her kindness. Years ago she came by one morning and dropped off some baby ducks for us to raise. We fed them all summer and had them for Thanksgiving instead of turkey. When I see ducks I often think back to the morning she showed up with a cardboard box with 4 or 5 ducks.
