Charles Ervin Larsen, age 96, of Hurley, South Dakota, passed away on May 26, 2025. Known for his dry wit, hardworking nature, and fiercely independent spirit, Charles lived a long, colorful life rooted deeply in the community where he was born. Charles was born on December 9, 1928, in Hurley, and remained a lifelong resident. From 1951 to 1953, he proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, separating as a Corporal (E-4) in aircraft operations.

After his service, Charles wore many hats—carpenter, farmer, and rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.

He took pride in a job done well and in the honest work that filled his days.

He was a dedicated community member and deeply involved in local civic and fraternal organizations. Charles was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years, serving as commander of the Hurley Legion and twice as commander of the Davis Legion. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Eastern Star for more than 30 years.

Charles was one of the founding members of Davis Winterstock and contributed many of the comedic plays the group performed—showcasing his love of storytelling and humor. He also served on the Hurley City Council and was a longtime member of the Hurley Museum. Charles found joy in the outdoors—especially golfing, fishing, and hunting. He loved to dance, tell stories, and make people laugh with his signature comedic writing. Whether swapping tales or penning playful anecdotes, he never missed an opportunity for a well-timed punchline. Charles will be remembered for his independence, his humor, and the many lives he touched through his stories, laughter, and unwavering sense of self.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Wachendorf, and his most recent wife, Meredith Jeanne Goodhope. He was also preceded in death by his son, Chuck Larsen. Charles is survived by his brother Dennis (MaryAnn) Larsen, and by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with whom he shared many meaningful relationships. From his late son Chuck (Linda) Larsen: • Chris (Jess) Larsen and their children Maren, Kohin, and Lachlan • Beth (Dave) Edgren and their children Maxwell, Miles, and Aubrey From his son Rich Larsen: • Casey Larsen • Brady (Amber) Larsen and their children Madilyn and Huxley • Ali (Lee) Eddy and their children Cam and Fae From his daughter Cathy (Stan) Thomas: • Nick (Becca) Larson and their children Avery, Olivia, and Ivee • Leslie (Jared) Huber and their children Lilly and Kaleb • Katie Moser • Hannah Ludens
