Duane Roney Obituary

Duane Theodore Roney, 77, of Charles City, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 3, 2025, in Decorah, at Aase Haugen Senior Services being comforted by family & staff. A funeral service for Duane Roney will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home with Chaplin Al Polito with St. Croix Hospice officiating. Burial will follow at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the service on Friday at the funeral home. Duane was born August 19, 1947, in Decorah, IA to Ralph and Angeline (Klotzbach) Roney. He was one of nine children. Duane graduated from Decorah High School in 1966. After graduation, Duane began work for Fred Carlson Construction until he was called to serve in the United States Army October 1966. Serving 1967-1968 in Vietnam. Upon returning, Duane met Linda Sweet and within a few years the two united in marriage on May 2, 1970. The couple took up residence in a few different locations until deciding to call Charles City their home building many wonderful friendships and memories. Duane had various occupations from his early beginning in construction, L & D Cleaning to Long & Short haul semi driving retiring from Conway (CCX) in December 2011. Duane was a soft-spoken man with an infectious smile and laugh that could warm hearts. He was an amazing son, brother, friend, husband, Dad, uncle, grandpa, and great grandpa. He most enjoyed spending time with family and friends from traveling, fishing, watching football, grilling, attending family activities, gardening, bird watching, building various wood items, and offering a helping hand. Duane was a marvelous father who loved telling stories of taking boys to football games (Go Hawks!, Go Vikings!), fishing trips (who ate the cookies), to the many famed camping trips were often his favorite to share. Duane was well respected as a devoted husband caring for Linda until her passing. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with ALS and within a few brief months our heavenly father called him home to join his beloved wife. Living family members include sons: Rob Sweet of Decorah, Thomas (Melissa) Roney of Iowa City, John (Jamie) Roney of Charles City. 12 Grandchildren: Hope, Paige, Dylan, Serena Sweet, Crystal, Jacob Garza; Jonah, Caleb, Sofia Roney; Caroline Hedrick, Nicholas, Emma Roney. 6 Great-Grandchildren: Harrison, Hadley, Nova, Mathias, Kaylix, Remus. Siblings: Arlin (Pat) Roney of Moncks Corner, SC; Donald (Arlene) Roney of Fort Collins, CO; Dale Roney of Waukon, IA; Trudy Barrett of Loveland, CO; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Duane was preceded in death by his wife Linda; Parents: Ralph & Angie Roney. Parent in laws: Harriet & Lester Leidahl. Siblings and in laws: Robert (Joanne) Roney, Elaine (Dick) Kessler, John Barrett, Jeanette Harms, Ruthie Farley, Dawn Roney, Annie (Kenny) Berry. Nephews: Jared Sweet, Travis Berry, Jeff Roney.
