David "Dave" Funk Sr. Obituary

David "Dave" Howard Funk Sr., aged 69, passed away on September 19, 2025, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem, NC. Born on December 24, 1955, he was the son of the late Della Mae and Andrew Funk. Dave was born in Youngstown, OH, but spent most of his life in the beautiful Mountain State of West Virginia. He was a respected and masterful mechanic, known for his ability to repair both heavy and small equipment, and enjoyed working on engines of any size, from yard equipment to military aircraft, and personal vehicles to excavators. His mechanical expertise was so profound that it was often said, "If Dave can't fix it, no one can."

Dave proudly served in the Air Force from 1974 to 1979, a period during which he dedicated himself to serving his country with distinction.

Beyond his professional and military life, Dave was a passionate outdoorsman who loved to hunt. He was also an avid music lover and collector who enjoyed many genres, but classic rock was always his favorite. In recent years, he found a lot of joy and peace sitting outside listening to his vast music collection.

Dave is survived by his children, David Funk Jr., Allen Funk (wife Jennifer), and Tamara Myers (husband Tony); grandsons, Mason Myers, Weston Varner, and Hanson Funk; great-grandchildren, Negan and Penelope Varner; his sister, Mary Miner; and special friend, Patsy Goodman. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Carolyn Wotring, Betty Funk, and Rose Brown.

Cremation services will be provided locally and a private family memorial will be held at a later date, per Dave's wishes. His children would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Trellis Supportive Care and the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for the loving care they provided for their father. Dave's legacy of service, both in his professional life and to his country, will be remembered by all who knew him.
