Deborah Mason Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 31, 2025.
Ridgefield - Deborah Mason's life came to an end peacefully in the early morning hours of July 6, 2025, at her home in Ridgefield, Washington, in the company of her loved ones. Having been diagnosed with cancer in 2019, she bravely faced the challenges of medical treatment with the positive outlook she always maintained, living life to the fullest to the end.

Deborah was born in San Diego, California, to Austin and Naomi Mason. The Mason family settled in Corona where Deborah grew up with her brother Terry and sister Susie. After graduating from Corona High School in 1970, Deborah pursued her interest in the performing arts as a theater student at Orange County College, later transferring to California State Fullerton, where she majored in psychology which led to a career in counseling. In 1969, Deborah married John Prichard and they relocated to Washington, D.C. then to San Antonio, where John attended medical schools. They settled in Ventura, California, where John established his medical practice and they had two children, John (Jake) and Anne.

Deborah's life in those days was primarily devoted to raising her children whom she adored and who always remained the center of her life. She also completed a masters degree in counseling. When her marriage ended Deborah moved to Santa Rosa, California, where she eventually met Michele Murphy, who became her wife and loving partner until her final days. In 2021, the couple moved to Ridgefield, Washington, with Deb's children and close friend, Chris Bell, nearby in Portland. While there, Deborah enjoyed the births of two grandchildren, Joni and George, born to Anne and husband Bob Buckstaff.

Deborah's commitment to social justice found expression in her professional life as a counselor at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, and as a count appointed advocate for children and families, and finally as youth education director at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Santa Rosa. She was also active throughout her life as a community organizer, serving passionately to aid marginalized people.

The dominant force in Deborah's life was love. It animated everything she did and led her to care deeply for her beloved family, her community and beyond. While we mourn her passing, we take comfort in knowing the love she offered the world is passed along through her children and grandchildren and all those who were touched by her grace, generosity and kindness.

Deborah is survived by her wife Michele, her children, Anne and Jake, her brother Terry, sister Susie, niece Allison, and nephews Benjamin, Julien and Jeffrey. A private family service will be held at her home. We ask all who knew and loved her to hold her close in your hearts.

Sending much love to Michele and to all who are supporting her and the family.. Our UU congregation was greatly enriched by her leadership with the religious education program and our personal lives were warmed by her love and smile.

Deb will be missed by many, as she knew and cared for so many people, families and children. I love her as a friend and chosen family. We met at the UU congregation and shared the love of get togethers, good meals, great wine, baseball, social justice and Project Runway, among many things. She is truly beautiful inside and out, and my heart is always there with Michele, Jake, Annie, Bob and her grandchildren. Deb will not be forgotten.
