Donald Hughes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 27, 2025.
Commander Donald C. "Don" Hughes passed away on July 5, 2025, in Jackson, Tennessee, at the age of 97. Born on August 13, 1927, in Birmingham, Alabama, Don lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a love for the natural world.

A proud graduate of Auburn University, Don embarked on a distinguished career with the U.S. Forest Service. Over the years, he played a vital role in overseeing operations across national forests, contributing to the stewardship and preservation of some of America's most treasured landscapes.

Don also served his country with honor in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1971. His service included both active duty and reserve roles, culminating in his retirement with the rank of Commander. His commitment to public service was a defining feature of his life.

For 70 years, Don shared an enduring marriage with Robbie Corzatte Hughes, the love of his life. Their long marriage was a testament to mutual devotion and strength.

He is remembered by his children: Wayne Hughes (Glenn Galau), Donna Hewitt (Mike), and Susan Cline (Steve). Don also leaves behind seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren-with one more expected in August-each of whom carries forward his legacy. He is also remembered by a loving family friend, Paula McKinney as well as other extended family and friends.

Outside of work and family life, Don found joy in sailing, camping, hiking and traveling. These pursuits reflected he and Robbie's adventurous spirit and appreciation for nature's beauty. Don and Robbie enjoyed their later retirement years in Fairhope, Alabama, Robbie's childhood home.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who value service, family, and the great outdoors. A Memorial Gathering will be held on July 31, 2025, at 01:30 PM at Barrancas National Cemtery 1 Cemetery Rd. The family will be receiving friends at Oaklawn Funeral Home at 619 New Warrington Rd, Pensacola, FL from 11:30AM until 12:30PM. At 1:00PM the funeral procession will leave the funeral home and drive to the National Cemetery together. Anyone wishing to attend the memorial at the National Cemetery should meet at the funeral home no later than 12:30PM.

Mr. Don was a dedicated husband and father. I witnessed his endless actions of love to his amazing wife, Ms. Bobbie, and his heartfelt desires to be with his children. I learned so much about life from him and I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him and Ms. Bobbie. We are praying for you all and your strength during this difficult time.
Blessings
